Digital Bearing Compass User Reviews

Great little app

Very handy, simple and functional. Working fine for me on an iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 17.

First it didn’t but now it does.

The Digital Bearing Compass for some inexplicable reason didn’t work when I first installed it on my iPad Pro. It worked on my wife’s ipad but even with Thomas’s help, I couldn’t get it to work on mine. Today, whilst cleaning out unused apps, I fired it up just to be sure before deleting it and lo and behold, it works perfectly. Must have had some updates. As far as the app goes, it’s brilliant, I love it!

Does what it says on the box

This app is easy to use and has no unnecessary cruft. When I had a question about locating a distant fix (which appear smaller due to the distance), the developer responded quickly and helpfully.

Digital bearing compass is excellent

I live work and play in Australia where the magnetic declination is 13° east. I have a boat and use it a great deal and I am always trying to ensure parity between the magnetic compass and the digital true North GPS, heading sensor and fluxgate compass. I see that this app gets an average of three stars and honestly that’s not fair. The rules for easterly declination are the opposite of westerly declination and I suspect most people don’t even know the declination of their area and therefore can never reconcile true and magnetic north. I purchased this app fired it up and blow me down...it is almost perfect.

No camera on I pad

Works very well on my i phone, I would give five stars, but camera function not working on my i pad. Please advise, thank you

Response from developer

If you do not have the lens covered, you have probably an old device which can not be used for augmented reality. You need an iPad Pro second generation or newer or an iPad Air 2017 or newer. Please ensure that you have given the permission to use the camera. Regards, T

Very unsatisfactory

I am using an iPhone 8+ with latest version.. App needs phone to be held horizontally and will not zoom so only very near items can be identified. After much trying at sea and on land I have not achieved a single reliable fix and request a refund.

So far so good

Nice useful app, reasonable price. would love to see one feature added... the ability to re-zero (or offset) pitch, bank and compass heading from any iPad / iPhone position so iPad could be mounted in some position other than directly in line of sight but still give (relative) pitch / bank and heading...

Thank you for the 5 stars. This is a good idea, I will definitely implement this...

Camera not visible on iPad Air 2

I downloaded the app about a week ago and the camera worked fine. Since the update 3 days ago the camera does not work.

Response from developer

As I have written in the description, iPad Air 2 is not compatible to use AR technology because it does not have the required hardware. It should never have worked. And the minimum required iOS version is 13.0, the iPad Air 2 does not support iOS 13, so something is a bit strange...

Very nice navigation app.

Useful for boating. I wish there were a way to have it record the bearing so that I can check my progress on a return journey.

Response from developer

Thank you...I am working on this and several other features..

Can’t see

One star because despite following all the instructions I can’t see as the camera is not being picked up. Using latest iOS version
Contacted the developer and no response. Very poor

Thomas
Thanks at least I know
Reason I downloaded as it say it runs on
my device
No intention of buying new phone so sadly I must ask for the refund🙁
Thank for taking time to explain

Regards
You sent a message on Apple using the same wording as used here then asked me same questions
Even though the app say iPhone + will run the app we know it will not
Please simply process the refund

It seems that the promise is hollow I have asked 3 times and all you can ask is my phone jailbroke
Please just do the refund

Thomas the App Store actually says “works on this device” nothing about what phone

Latest answer now here at the top, so you can read it more easily without scrolling: I wrote the minimum required device in the text which describes the app. It is there, I checked it. But it is a lot of text, maybe it is easy to miss. I will write it at a different place at the next update. However, if you request the refund, no harm is done... Dear User, I answer all contact requests, so it seems I have overseen yours. What device and which iOS version do you use ? Is your device jailbroken ? Regards, Thomas IPhone 6+ does not support AR technology because it does not have the required chip built in. If you do not plan to buy a new device in future, please request your money back. Sorry that you had this experience, I do not understand why you are able to download this app in the first place...that’s why I asked if it is jailbroken... Please read the text in the AppStore. It says, you need an iPhone 6s or 6s+ or any newer model. You have to rerquest the refund via the AppStore, I can’t do that of course. Regards, Thomas

Nettes Spielzeug...

...aber auf See im Wellengang kaum zu gebrauchen. Dafür sind die Schriften zu klein und heben sich oft genug nicht vom Hintergrund ab.

Response from developer

Ok, werd ich überarbeiten. Head up displays in Flugzeugen haben oft grüne Schrift, denke da hat sich wer was dabei gedacht, ich werde es also auch probieren bei einem der nächsten updates. Danke für die Info.

GPS Positions

I have just purchased and downloaded this app and so far so good.
However, as I use Degrees Decimal Minutes (DDM) for all my GPS positions, is there any way of changing the screen display from Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS) to DDM please?

Response from developer

Thank you for using the app and thank you for the input. I will implement this in the next update.

Great app

Started using this app on an iPhone 7, now using on an iPhone Xs. Works great, never any problems.

Response from developer

Thank you ! I am glad to read that !

Cannot get camera to work

No image on iPhone 6+

Response from developer

Dear User, IPhone 6+ does not support AR technology, please request a refund if you do not plan to get a new device in future. Sorry you had this experience. The requirements are described on my website and in the information of the App Store. Regards, Thomas

Cannot see

Potentially a good app.. but in sunlight, I just cannot see the text no matter how I change it. Please make it readable and bigger!

Response from developer

Yes, you wrote this on facebook...I will try to make this better in one of the next updates.

Digital Bearing Compass

App will not display camera view.
Using iPhone 5s and latest iOS

Response from developer

As I wrote to you in the email, iPhone 5s does not support augmented reality, only iPhone 7 upwards. You should not be able to download the app, most probably your device is jailbroken.

Not worth the cost

Terrible app..completely freezes up the phone/camera..junk. I’m an 40 year airline pilot, power boat and sailboat user. My iPhone 8 and IPad Air has the latest software.

Response from developer

Never happened during testing and should not be possible. Which device and iOS version do you have ? Is it jailbroken ???

Calibration

I like this app but it is showing an error of 30 degrees. I am wondering if it can be calibrated.
Thank you for your reply, the app is working perfectly now and I have found it very useful. Well worth five stars.

Response from developer

Yes it can be calibrated. When iOS sees the need for it, a respective window will pop up. The deviation does not come from the app, the app takes the heading directly from the operating system. You should see the same heading on other apps which use the compass. There are many reasons for a wrong heading....the sensors are sometimes not completely correct and most often a magnetic field near the device is the reason. A magnetised cover for the device or the iPad keyboard for instanced make the compass unusable.

Could be really useful but doesn’t work.

To the developer following their response to my review:

a) In the App Store the information on your app says specifically that it is compatible with my device.

b) it also does not work on my iPad which is a recent model.

c) my device is running IOS 12.3.1 as I told you in my email.

d) you did not say in your email to me that the app required a particular chipset nor that it wouldn’t work on an iPhone 5s. What you said was, ‘This is very strange. I will try to find out if such a thing ever happened and is documented in the internet. I will keep you informed.’

I’m sorry if you are upset with my review but it is based upon fact and my experience. Your response is not an accurate reflection of my experience nor of our exchange of emails.

Response from developer

Dear user, the app does work perfectly. As I wrote in the description , the app uses AR technology which requires iOS 11 and a special chip which is included only in modern devices. You wrote you have an iPhone 5 which is not AR capable. However, this is the reason why refunds are possible, but please read the description of an app before downloading it and giving bad reviews. Update to the new review text: Here you can check the compatibility of your devices: https://www.redmondpie.com/ios-11-arkit-compatibility-check-if-your-device-is-compatible-with-apples-new-ar-platform/ And please check the settings of your devices. This app was downloaded many times by now and it runs on every device except yours. So chances are high that there is something wrong with your devices. Regards, Thomas Oswald
