A measuring tape would be easier

The process of measuring is not completely clear and it does not work for most applications. I tried to simply measure a distance from my back door to the edge of my fence and it failed. I tried to measure the length of the fence and it failed. I tried to measure the height of the fence and it failed. In short, I want my $1 back.
