Learn to count beats, bars and phrases the way DJs do: by listening and tapping, not by staring at a waveform.
Djlingo is a course for people who want to learn to DJ. Module 1 is free, takes about 20 minutes, and needs no account.
Every lesson is short and most of it is hands-on: you listen, tap and count.
WHAT YOU LEARN IN MODULE 1: BEATS, BARS AND PHRASES
- Beats and bars: tap along with a beat and count bars by ear
- The one: find the downbeat without looking
- BPM: work out beat and bar lengths, guess a loop's tempo and tap it to check
- Phrases: count 8-bar phrases and tap the start of the next one
- Start on the phrase: learn why a mix starts on a phrase boundary, then start a second track on time
HOW YOU PRACTISE
- Tap along on the beat and tap the one
- Count the bars and predict the drop with no counter on screen
- Guess the BPM, then tap it to check
- Hear whether a loop is faster or slower
- Short quizzes that explain every answer
- Track maps that show bars and phrases, so you can see where a change lands before you hear it
TIMING THAT FITS YOUR HEADPHONES
The phone speaker, wired headphones and Bluetooth headphones each play sound with a different delay. Djlingo corrects for it, so tap exercises score what you actually hear. The correction starts from an estimate: the delay your iPhone reports, minus the small amount most people tap ahead of the beat. With Bluetooth headphones, a 15-second timing check measures your own value. After every scored tap you see whether it was early, on time or late, and by how many milliseconds. Tap timing in Settings shows the correction in use, with a live tap test and the timing check.
THE FULL COURSE: ONE PURCHASE, NO SUBSCRIPTION
The full course is a one-time purchase. It opens two more modules now:
- Mixing in key (5 lessons): hear major and minor keys, read the Open Key wheel, and choose tracks whose keys mix
- Pitch, tempo and key (3 lessons): tempo ranges and half-time, how the pitch fader changes tempo and key, and what key lock does
COMING SOON, INCLUDED IN THE PURCHASE
Four more modules are in the app, marked "Coming soon": phrasing and track structure; chords and scales in dance music; choosing the next track; and where house and techno come from. They are included in the full course and open when they are released, at no extra cost. Module 1 stays free.
