App not opening

After signing up the app closes every time I try to open it, I’ve restarted my phone and reinstalled the app, still it crashes :(

Favorite Chinese learning app

I just started using the app today and I already love it! I used HelloChinese before and then they suddenly wanted me to pay so i looked everywhere for another app until i found this one. Although i have to "redo" everything i learned on other apps it's been really fun and the dictionary feature is amazing. This is genuinely the best layout for any language learning app that I've ever seen and apparently it's free?? This app is so underrated.

I love this app

This app is really amazing for character recognition and learning tones, strokes, etc. They have pretty much everything you need, articles, dictionary, and even a progress bar that keeps you accountable each day. Personally, using Dot Languages has made me enjoy learning Chinese so much and I’m so grateful for this app.

Too simplified, unhelpful buttons, and not intuitive to navigate anymore

The beta version has now become the default version and even though you can switch off Interactive mode (the conversation is presented one speech bubble at a time) and go into Reading Comprehension mode (the whole article is presented at once), there are some issues. The interface has a minimalist feel to it compared to before and while it looks sleek, it’s become more complicated to actually use and there’s a lot of friction points due to the design choices that were made at the cost of functionality (e.g., it’s very clunky if you want to restart the audio of the article from a specific spot). There seem to be more updates recently but it feels like changes are being made without thorough or thoughtful user testing. Sad because I used to use the app a lot more but now these changes and new friction points are causing me to get less out of the app and less excited about using the app. I will say though that I appreciate the team being fairly responsive and they seem like they do care about user feedback but they will probably not go back to the version of the app I loved.

Very helpful

I started off with Duolinguo to practice Chinese every day, in addition to working with a tutor and textbook. After about a year I'd finished all the Chinese content it had. After looking at many apps I chose this one. I'm grateful to the team as they're very responsive if there's a problem. And my tutor appreciates it as it's helping me quite a bit with tones and writing hanzi. And I'm so glad that this app will not run out on content as I continue learning. I recommend this app!

Love it

It is so helpful, kind of wish it had Korean and Japanese as well! But mandarin is made easy with this :)

Good lessons, No ads

Found this from reddit, my favourite chinese learning app

App has gone severely downhill

The latest update has taken away so much of the features and flexibility I used to love about the app. The app used to be such that the entire article was presented in a straightforward manner with the ability to listen to it at 0.6x, 0.8x or 1.0x speed, and you could start and stop the audio from anywhere in the article. Now the articles are presented in this overly gamified and controlled way where only one line of dialogue is presented at a time and you have to press continue to move forward while unnecessary pop ups for new vocab disrupt the flow. Once you get through clicking through the numerous continue buttons, there is seemingly no way to replay the audio except going back and starting over, so the flexibility to listen to the article from a specific spot is gone. I hate that I have no control or freedom in how I engage with the articles anymore. Not being able to replay the audio in the article because there is no longer a play button is a severe design flaw.

Articles disappearance

This really is a great app for mandarin learners and i’m very pleased with it. But i’ve been facing some issues lately when using it. The articles i’m reading disappeared when i hit the back icon and i couldn’t find it anywhere. Please kindly fix it. Thank you.

Fix this bug please (otherwise amazing app!)

I love this app. As an intermediate chinese learner, I benefit extremely from reading and writing practice this app offers. I could only reccomend it!

However, with the new update, I noticed a bug which happens after finishing a lesson. The “return” button appears in the main window below the practiced words. However, I can only scroll to a certain amount and the button is only visible partially making it very difficult to press. Please fix this annoying bug. Otherwise an amazing app!

Must have for learning Chinese

I have used many Chinese learning apps and this one is the best. The sheer depth of content plus the follow up exercises help me retain and remember what I learned instead of just reading and forgetting. There is so much content in here for me to learn at my current level—it’s wonderful. No other app does that as well.

I also like how the app is tied to the new HSK 3.0. I had been studying the old HSK format before and the new one is MUCH better. The words are more useful for learning and the characters you learn will build your vocabulary faster.

This is the best Chinese learning app. Get it!

Great potential, bugs and high prices are frustrating

I loved this app before the recent update. The new limitations to stories read, though frustrating, would be ok if it worked. However there is a bug where if you leave the story and go back in the same story, that counts as two stories being read, and you’ll be locked out of it.

When I was at the end of HSK 2 there were also these exercises where you had to answer questions, and they were so difficult to answer correctly. There were moments where I wrote the exact sentence from the story or recommended sentence and it not only didn’t work, it takes up to 30 seconds to tell you that what you wrote was wrong.

I was close to paying for this app, but these bugs make it frustrating to use. I’ll be using Du Chinese as a reader now since I’m not taking the HSK anyway.

Very helpful

Great app. Developers are clearly very active in updating the app. The illustrations are a new thing which I don’t think are useful. It does not enhance our Chinese learning experience to see a drawing and an English word. Would love an option for lifetime subscription to access the premium features.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Some of our providers in the previous version of our app, only supported iOS 17, leading to issues with earlier versions of iOS. We're pleased to inform you that this has been resolved in the most recent version of our app. You might need to delete the version you already have installed first, to ensure no previous data is included with the update. Solid Chinese Learning App

This app is really solid for helping you learn mandarin Chinese, especially with stroke order! I’m taking a college elementary mandarin class currently and wanted to find apps to help give me a leg up on the homework, tests and quizzes and this has definitely helped! When I first downloaded the app it didn’t work and I left a review saying so. Shortly afterwards the developers responded to my review and suggested certain things for me to do to get it to open and that they had fixed it and sure enough they had! Things I love about this app: - Stroke order learning! - Stories that include the vocabulary - Ability to select what you want to work on (i.e., listening, reading, or writing) Things I think could be improved: - Speaking exercises. I know the app says it’s being developed but this would really round out the app - More vibrant colors. The colors aren’t bad, but I feel like a wider variation in colors, backgrounds or something similar during exercises and practice lessons could give this app a very eye appealing look it it’s users - Pictures to help remember words. There is another app I use for learning mandarin which provides some illustrations of the characters to help one remember them better. It’s not a make or break, but it is something I've found helpful in remembering certain characters. Overall, this is a really great resource for learning mandarin and from my experience with it I highly recommend it for mandarin learners!
