Energy density is described as the amount of energy stored in a region or system per unit volume. Both electric and magnetic fields can store energy. Energy density is denoted by the letter U.
In electromagnetic waves, both the magnetic and electric fields contribute equally to energy density. Therefore, the formula for energy density is the sum of the energy densities of the electric and magnetic fields.
Formula:
U = E² * (ϵ₀ / 2) + B² / (μ₀ * 2)
Where:
U - Energy density
E - Electric field
B - Magnetic field
ϵ₀ - Vacuum permittivity, ϵ₀ ≈ 8.8541 * 10^(-12) F/m
μ₀ - Vacuum permeability, μ₀ ≈ 4π * 10^(-7) H/m
