About
Stop memorizing English words. Encode them. Fable Words links every word to a sound, a story and a picture. Built for Turkish speakers: the anchors and stories are in Turkish, the words are English. Your brain forgets lists. It does not forget stories.
HOW "HONEY" STICKS
"honey" sounds like the Turkish word "hani" (where is). The story: at breakfast, the bear asks "hani benim BALım?" (where is my HONEY?). Next time you hear "honey", "hani" comes back, "hani" brings the story, and the story brings the meaning: BAL. The anchor is a reminder, not a translation. The meaning is always shown in capitals, clear and single.
ENCODING IN THREE STEPS
1. Sound anchor: every English word is tied to a familiar Turkish word that sounds like it. New information drops anchor in a sound you already know.
2. Story: one sentence, in Turkish. It puts the anchor and the meaning in the same scene. That sentence is the only thing you have to remember.
3. Picture: a scene drawn specifically for each word. More than 500 words, each with its own illustration. You do not forget what you have seen.
WHY IT WORKS: THE SCIENCE
These three steps are not a gimmick. They follow the most replicated findings in memory research.
• The keyword method: developed at Stanford by Atkinson and Raugh in 1975. A foreign word is linked to a similar-sounding native word and to a mental image that joins it with the meaning. Across dozens of studies it produced markedly higher recall than rote repetition. Fable Words' sound anchor and story are a direct application of this method.
• Dual coding (Paivio): information encoded through both the verbal and the visual channel gets two separate retrieval paths. That is why every word has its own picture.
• The elaboration effect: knowledge learned by building a meaningful connection outlasts knowledge learned by mechanical repetition. The story builds exactly that connection.
• Spaced repetition: Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve shows a review is most effective right before you would forget. Fable Words keeps that schedule for you.
The result: instead of reading a list twenty times and forgetting it next week, you encode a word once and remember it far longer with far fewer reviews. More words in the same time, less effort, results that last.
IT COMES BACK ON THE DAY YOU WOULD FORGET
Each word comes back right before you would forget it. The app keeps the schedule, not you: words you know return less often, words you miss come straight back. Practice runs in two rounds: first you find the word missing from the story, then you see the Turkish meaning and produce the English word yourself. You never depend on the anchor. You genuinely remember.
START AT YOUR OWN LEVEL
A short placement test puts you between A1 and C1. You skip the words you already know and start with the ones that are new to you. Beginners and IELTS, TOEFL, YDS or YÖKDİL candidates each find their own starting point.
A PLAN MADE FOR YOU
Your level, your minutes a day and your time frame: the plan comes from these. New words, practice and reviews in a single tap; the app sets the order. Over morning coffee or before bed; the review schedule handles the rest.
