About
Farshtey ("understand" in Yiddish) teaches you to read a sicha in the original — and understand it.
The sicha is divided into short passages. Each passage has two steps: • Study — read the passage. Tap any word to see what it means right here, with its dictionary form and type (Yiddish, Lashon Hakodesh, phrase). Every sentence also has a translation of the whole sentence. • Play — then a short game makes sure you understood: the same passage, without translations. Choose what each word means, and finish with a comprehension question on the whole passage.
Each passage you pass unlocks the next, along a path of 24 passages to the end of the sicha. The first sicha: Shabbos Parshas Bereishis 5752.
A Reading chapter, for anyone who doesn't yet read Yiddish fluently: • In Yiddish the vowels are letters: אָ, ע, י, וי, יי. The vowel table shows the matching niqqud for each one. • "How is it read?" — choose how a word from the sicha is read. After a mistake you get a hint and another try. • Four stages: single vowels, combinations, long words, and sentences from the sicha with Lashon Hakodesh in Chabad pronunciation.
Stars, points and ranks: • Up to three stars for each passage, by how well you understood it. • +10 points for each correct answer, −2 for a wrong one. Points add up from every game, replays too. • Eight ranks, from Copper through Silver and Gold up to Diamond. • A streak of study days, a daily goal of one passage, and a Hebrew learning calendar of the days you learned. • Sharing: after a passage, send friends an image of your result.
Built for learners: • A daily reminder at the time you choose — can be turned off. • Shabbos and Yom Tov — no notifications or reminders on Shabbos and Yom Tov, based on your city's times. Your streak counts study days and never breaks on Shabbos, Yom Tov, Erev Shabbos or the holidays. • No ads, no sign-up, no data collection. Everything stays on your device. • Hebrew or English interface; the sicha itself is always right-to-left. • Gentle kalimba and wood sounds, and a tune that builds with every correct answer in a row — can be turned off. • Dark mode, and large, comfortable text.
