About
Heading across Puget Sound? FerryOrNot answers the question every ferry rider
actually has: take the boat, or drive around?
It compares both, door to door, using live Washington State Ferries data and real
traffic — then tells you which one gets you there sooner, and how much to trust the
answer.
WHAT IT DOES
Compares ferry against driving around, ranked by arrival time, between any two
places you give it.
Names the boat. The verdict reads "Take the 4:35 ferry" — not a vague nudge toward
the terminal.
Says when it doesn't know. Every recommendation carries a confidence read, and when
the two options are genuinely too close to call, it says so instead of picking.
Predicts delays instead of repeating them. Sailings on nine crossings carry a
forecast built from months of vessel telemetry, so a boat running late is often
flagged before the schedule admits it.
Tells you when to leave. A leave-by time for the sailing you chose, worked back
through live traffic and a dock cushion measured from real toll-booth data.
ONCE YOU'VE PICKED A BOAT
Commit to a sailing and the app stays with you:
- A journey card that follows you through the app and keeps the countdown honest
- Lock Screen updates while you drive, with your ferry pass ready to scan at the
toll booth
- A warning if your sailing is cancelled, delayed, or stops being catchable — and an
all-clear when it recovers
- A reminder as you reach the terminal, with the right pass already open
THE REST
- Live vessel map, with a slider back through the day
- Terminal cameras, so you can see the holding lanes yourself
- WSF service alerts and bulletins
- Drive-up space estimates, and how full this sailing usually is by now
- Tides, wind and water temperature at the crossing
- Live WSF fares for your direction
- Link a Wave2Go pass by camera and check remaining rides
ROUTES
Ten crossings: Seattle–Bainbridge, Seattle–Bremerton, Edmonds–Kingston,
Mukilteo–Clinton, Fauntleroy–Vashon, Fauntleroy–Southworth, Southworth–Vashon,
Point Defiance–Tahlequah, Port Townsend–Coupeville, and Anacortes–San Juan Islands.
Delay predictions cover the nine crossings where we have enough history.
Anacortes–San Juans runs on the published schedule, and the app says so rather than
guessing.
PRIVACY
Your location stays on your phone. Routing runs on-device through Apple Maps, and
our servers only ever send data down — they never receive your location, your trips,
or your passes.
SUBSCRIPTION
FerryOrNot is a subscription: $1.49/month or $14.99/year, with a 7-day free trial.
It covers everything above. No ads, no accounts, no tracking.
Ferry schedules, vessel status, and drive-up space are provided by WSDOT /
Washington State Ferries. Traffic and routing from Apple Maps. Tides and marine
conditions from NOAA. Space counts are live estimates, not reservations or
guarantees. FerryOrNot is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed
by Washington State Ferries or WSDOT.
FerryOrNot gives estimates, not guarantees. Schedules, delays, space counts, fares, and leave-by times come from third-party data that can be wrong or late, and conditions change. Always check WSDOT/WSF directly and allow a margin. Chowen Labs is not responsible for missed sailings, schedule changes, or fare differences.
