About

FiloBatik is an educational research tool for exploring Indonesian batik. Photograph a cloth — or pick one from your gallery — and FiloBatik gives you an estimated motif name, its character, and its likely region of origin, then places it on the "batik phylomemetic tree": a reconstructed map of kinship between archipelago batik motifs, based on Situngkir (2009), "The Phylomemetics of Batik" (Bandung Fe Institute). SCIENTIFIC HONESTY FiloBatik is a research reconstruction for learning, NOT an expert appraiser. Its output is a ranked estimate (top-3 candidate regions with confidence levels), never a verdict. For authentication or curation, please consult batik curators and experts. FEATURES • Opening screen: the "Batik Phylomemetic Tree" — a zoomable circular dendrogram with a short bilingual introduction. • Photograph a cloth with the camera, or pick an image from the photo gallery. • Detection gate: when an image is NOT batik, the app says so plainly, with the reason. • Estimated motif name (e.g. "Besurek Diagonal") from the closest reference cloth, with an origin and character description extracted from catalogue captions (OCR). • Estimated origin: top-3 candidate regions with confidence bars, plus placement into the four phylomemetic branches — Court/Vorstenlanden, Central-Java Coast, West Java, and Outer Centres & the Archipelago. • "Position on the phylomemetic tree": a reconstructed radial tree (root → 4 branches → regions) with the identified region ring-marked. • A real, zoomable map of Indonesia (Apple Maps): batik centres as pins — sized by the number of reference motifs, coloured by branch — with the identified region ringed. • A "memeplex fingerprint" of your photo: fractal dimension and dominant colour palette — the two core traits of Situngkir's method. • Fully bilingual Indonesian/English with an in-app toggle; follows the system language. PRIVACY, FULLY ON-DEVICE All classification runs on your device (Apple Vision FeaturePrint plus classical "memeplex" features against an internal batik reference). Photos NEVER leave the device — no uploads, no server, no account, no ads, no tracking. The only network use is Apple Maps tiles for the distribution map; classification works fully offline. ATTRIBUTION Reference imagery and captions are derived from the open Perpustakaan Digital Budaya Indonesia (budaya-indonesia.org), as used in the original research. Poster/tree visual © Bandung Fe Institute (Situngkir). Scientific basis: Situngkir, H. (2009), "The Phylomemetics of Batik", BFI Working Paper WP-8-2009, Bandung Fe Institute.
