What's New in Fire Alarm Prep

3.0

August 28, 2026

This update is built on what you told us. SEE WHAT YOU GOT WRONG The most requested change: after any quiz or exam you can now review every question you missed, side by side with the answer you chose, the correct answer, the explanation and the NFPA 72 or NEC section it comes from. A toggle shows all questions, not just the missed ones. Previously you saw a score and nothing else, which told you how you did but nothing about what to work on. NO MORE REPEATED QUESTIONS Some practice tests were drawing the same question more than once. The cause was in the question bank itself, which held duplicate copies of many items. Every duplicate has been removed, so a 50-question test is now 50 distinct questions. 88 NEW QUESTIONS Deeper coverage where it was thinnest: audible and visible notification requirements, circuit classes and survivability, secondary power and battery calculations, duct and beam detection, elevator recall and shutdown interlocks, positive alarm sequence, voice intelligibility, and the documentation an inspector actually asks for. Four topics had no questions at all and now do: conduit and raceway fill, grounding and bonding, smoke control and HVAC interfaces, and two-way communication at areas of refuge. Sloped and joisted ceilings, carbon monoxide detection, Class N pathways and shop drawing content all got deeper. Every question cites its NFPA 72 chapter or NEC section. TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY Take a free 10-question scored sample exam, once a day. Same engine as the full 50-question exam, including the complete answer review, so you can see where you stand before deciding anything. A FAIRER EXAM Answer options are now shuffled every sitting, so retaking an exam tests what you know rather than which position you remember. The whole bank was rebalanced so no answer letter is favoured. The exam clock now runs on real time. Backgrounding the app no longer pauses it, which means your practice timing matches the real thing. EIGHT CALCULATORS — TWO NEW Strobe Coverage turns room dimensions into the minimum candela rating, for wall or ceiling mounting, and shows when four smaller appliances beat one large one. Conduit Fill checks a raceway against NEC Chapter 9, including the 31% limit for exactly two conductors that is so easy to miss. Alongside battery sizing with standby and alarm loads, voltage drop and wire sizing, detector spacing layout, sound level against NFPA 72 targets, NAC loading and SLC loading. Every calculator shows the formula it used. 18 WRITTEN STUDY GUIDES New in this version, and the largest addition after the questions themselves. Eighteen written topics — around two hours of reading — covering fundamentals, manual boxes, duct and beam and air-sampling and flame detection, notification and voice intelligibility, pathway classes and survivability, NEC Article 760 wiring, raceway fill and grounding, secondary power and battery calculations, elevator recall and shunt trip, smoke control, sequence of operations and positive alarm sequence, acceptance testing and ITM frequencies, field troubleshooting, and shop drawings. Each carries its key terms and the points worth walking into the exam with. The first three are free to read. ALSO IN THIS UPDATE The flashcard decks grew from 21 cards to 62 across five decks. The eight NFPA 72 quick reference cards, the inspection checklist and the NICET certification pathway are all still here. A launch crash on low-storage devices is fixed. Existing installs now receive new and corrected questions on update instead of keeping whatever they first downloaded.

To whom might interest

It will be great if you show the edition of the NFPA 72 you’re currently working with. I was taking the practice exam and some references from NFPA doesn’t match or seems like if they were deleted .

Response from developer

Hi Alejandro, thanks for flagging this — you were right, there was a bug in v1.0 that prevented the Exam Simulator from advancing past question 1. It's fixed in v2.1, which is now live on the App Store. We also added a NAC Circuit Calculator, SLC Loop Resistance Calculator, and NFPA 72 reference cards in this release. Email us at arun@voltexam.com if anything else comes up — we read every message. — Team VoltExam

Needs some fixing to be 100%

The questions are very repetitive it will ask identical questions in the same practice test also when taking practice test after it’s completed you are not able to review the questions you answered incorrectly. Wish you were able to see that to work on what you are having hard time with.

Response from developer

You were right on both counts, and both are fixed in version 3.0. After any quiz or exam you can now review every question you missed, with the answer you picked, the correct one, the explanation, and the NFPA 72 or NEC section behind it. There's a toggle for all questions, not just the missed ones. That was the single most requested thing we had, and you described exactly why. Thank you for taking the time to write it up — it's the reason both changes exist.

New version updated

There was an issue with the exam simulator functionality, thankfully it was fixed with the new version release.
