This update majorly reworks much of the app, with a focus on the reader, app appearance, and the feed. The feed now ranks papers on-device. FirstPass downloads each day's papers and uses your likes to order them for you, totally locally. The reader received most of the enhancements. HTML coverage has broadened, so now most older papers and more newer papers are available. HTML documents have been greatly enhanced. In-line reference, table, figure, or equation links can be tapped for an instant preview. So no more navigating back and forth between figures and text. Figures and tables can now be opened in a full viewer, and more closely inspected. Passages can be selected for on-device explanations using Apple's Foundation model, which provides context using in-paper information. An on-device sentence-comparison model has been added, so high salience sentences can be highlighted for easier skimming. Exports are now supported for Obsidian or Markdown formats, with figures and equations intact. A new tab system has been added, named PaperTrail. Recent papers are tracked in a side-panel within the reader, to ease navigation and paper switching. A "Continue reading" bar has been added to all tabs, so you can easily return to the reader from anywhere in the app. iPad's layout has been updated to more broadly support multi-pane views. A different, more heavily quantized and stripped model is being used for brief generation. File size is dropping from 350MB to 97MB. Briefs will maintain their quality while generating more efficiently. FirstPass Plus now includes sentence highlighting, PaperTrail enhancements, and Foundation model explanations with all previous benefits. Some new features are available to everyone within free limits.
