Five Acres of Freedom

Five Acres of Freedom answers the question every homesteader starts with: how much land — and how many animals — does a year of food actually take? Say what your kitchen needs: pounds of tomatoes, dozens of eggs, gallons of milk, a year of pork, sixty quarts of sauce. Year's Needs answers with real numbers — how many plants, how many hens, how much ground, how much water and feed and compost — from planting guides covering more than 370 crops and every common breed of homestead animal. Then it finishes the thought: a map to stake it out on, an order list to buy it with, and a guided four-step walkthrough that takes you from "what do we eat?" to "it's ordered." YOUR LAND, TO SCALE Map your parcel once, then lay out raised beds, orchard blocks, vineyard rows, pastures, coops, ponds, buildings, and field plots — everything at true proportions, draggable, with spacing guidance from the same catalogs that plan your year. The map warns when trees are too tight or two items overlap. It never blocks you: your land, your call. LOG EVERYTHING IN TWO TAPS Eggs collected, harvests weighed, feedings, milkings, losses, expenses, sales. Every module speaks its own language — flocks and herds, hives and bins, beds and blocks — and every entry lands in one Journal, organized by season, with photos. THE APP LEARNS YOUR GROUND Planting windows come from your real frost dates — derived from ten years of weather at your postal code, not just a zone chart. And once you log a season, your own numbers outrank the book: your hens' real lay rate, your ground's real pounds per plant. The plan gets more yours every year. THE WHOLE BARN, THE WHOLE GARDEN Chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, guinea fowl, pheasants, pigeons, rabbits, goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, horses, bees, worms and more — plus vegetables, herbs, flowers, mushrooms, field crops, fruit and nut trees, soft fruit, and a 49-grape vineyard. Kitchen too: canning, fermenting, freeze drying, sourdough, syrup, tinctures — with honest ready-and-keeps clocks for every jar. STAY ON TOP OF THE WORK An Almanac that plans crops, husbandry jobs, and staggered meat raises; chores with streaks and gentle reminders; a Money tab with the whole account book; Milestones earned from your own logs; a Year in Review worth reading by the fire.
