A Testament to the Pursuit of the Uncatchable
If you’re a fellow Sasquatch hunter, Fletched is for you. I’ve been able to get two shots off on him that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.
Let me elaborate.
For seventeen years I have pursued the great Appalachian Cryptid across ridgelines, creek bottoms, and one particularly humiliating swamp in eastern Tennessee where I lost both my rangefinder and my dignity. In that time I have developed what I can only describe as a deeply personal and unreciprocated relationship with my quarry. He knows my draw weight. I know his gait cadence. We are, in the truest sense, adversaries shaped by one another.
And yet, for all my extensive preparation… the 3D target practice, the scent elimination, the painstaking study of track castings spanning nearly two decades… I kept making the same catastrophic error: failure to account for Sasquatch’s anomalous drag coefficient. The creature is, by any aerodynamic reckoning, a nightmare. Somewhere between 700 and 900 pounds of matted, wind-catching fur moving at a deceptively brisk 14 miles per hour through mixed hardwood canopy. Standard ballistic calculators simply were not built for this. I cannot tell you how many broadheads I’ve sent screaming into nothing because I was working off whitetail assumptions applied to a target with the frontal profile of a sectional sofa.
Fletched changed everything.
Once I dialed in my setup 72-pound draw, 29-inch draw length, 450-grain total arrow weight with a fixed three-blade up front for maximum penetration through what I can only assume is a truly extraordinary hide, and input my shot parameters, the trajectory data it returned was nothing short of revelatory. I had been under-compensating for wind drift by a factor I am too embarrassed to publish in a public review.
Fletched knew. Fletched always knew.
The first shot I was able to get off thanks to this application was at 47 yards, slight quartering-away angle, 11 mph crosswind out of the northwest, a modest 800-foot elevation, early November. The kind of shot that, in a previous life, I would have simply not taken. The kind of shot that separates the recreational cryptid enthusiast from the serious ethical harvester. Fletched ran the numbers in approximately four seconds. I trusted the data. I settled my pin.
He was gone before the arrow arrived, obviously, because Sasquatch exhibits a preternatural awareness of impending ballistic events that science has yet to adequately explain, but the form was there. The arrow buried itself six inches into a white oak at exactly the calculated point of impact. The shot was perfect. He simply was not.
The second shot, I would rather not discuss in full detail as it remains an active area of personal grief, but I will say it was 63 yards, mild uphill trajectory, fog conditions, and I had perhaps consumed slightly more camp coffee than is ideal for fine motor stability. Fletched’s data was again impeccable. The variables I introduced were entirely my own.
My one critique — and I offer this in the spirit of constructive engagement with what is clearly a serious ballistics platform — is that there is currently no field in the input section for estimated fur depth, which I believe materially affects penetration calculations when pursuing large unclassified primates. I have submitted this as a feature request. I await the update with great anticipation.
Five stars. Would recommend to any bowhunter operating at the intersection of technical precision and profound, possibly delusional, optimism.
