Flicker Meter for Light User Reviews

Justify buying new monitor

Great tool!

Response from developer

Thank you so much for the kind words! A flickering monitor is no fun. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with the app!

Unclear that it actually works

I tested on every light in my house, LEDs and incandescent and used a tripod for stability. It said no flicker for every light but I know that isn’t true. I don’t know how I can trust the output - but I subscribed “for life” lol

Response from developer

Thanks for taking the time to test thoroughly with a tripod. Incandescent bulbs often do not show flicker since they stay hot between AC cycles, so those results sound right. For LEDs, it depends on the driver - quality ones have good power smoothing and truly don't flicker. Try on some fluorescent lamps and I am pretty sure you will see that the app will detect there flicker. Thank you and feel free to write directly to me at apps@contechity.com

Flickering from Los Lunas N.M. 87031 Data Center

Our lights flicker all the time, the power level problems here are related to the Benghazi like Data Center under construction. Surges and RF effects from Drones also affect the lights. People here have filed and won a Class Action suit for the Dirt related to this data center+- it’s likely another suit will follow RE: electronic smog destroying everything from appliances to Mental Health- that’s right, we feel the effects and it’s painful and it’s been noted in the medical record, people want out of this community- it’s toxic and hurts!

Response from developer

I really appreciate the 5-star rating! I'm sorry to hear about the difficult situation you and your community are facing with the power quality issues and their effects. It sounds incredibly challenging. I'm glad Flicker Meter has been useful in documenting the flickering problems you're experiencing. Thanks

Not free

Listed as free on the app store, after using it once it would kick me out after declining to pay for a subscription. Useful for the one time i could open it

Response from developer

Yes, the app is free to use for a few weeks so that everyone can try it out. After that, if you like it, a subscription or a one-time purchase is required for continued use. Let me know at apps@contechity.com if you did not have time enough to test it, so that I can prolong your test period. Thank you so much!

Great app and support

The support for the app when I contacted was excellent. The app works much better than the other apps I tried for this. Would definitely recommend

Doesn't work

The app won't pick up any flickering on an LED light with PWM dimmer. That's how PWM dimmers work they flicker. Waste of money.

Response from developer

Strange! Clearly it does not work properly for you. I am very interested in solving this - if you have the time, I would be very happy if you could send me an email so that I can ask you some questions to figure out what is causing this. apps@contechity.com Thank you!

Not as fussy as my eyes

Flicker meter would say light was steady when I felt like I was in a claymation movie, and the video preview would show light bands rolling across the frame. Maybe it just doesn’t detect flicker over 100hz. It tries to do exactly what I want, it just doesn’t seem to get there.

Response from developer

Thanks for your review. Sorry for this! Would you please send me an email, so that I can sort out why this does not seem to work on your device. It should absolutely be able to detect flicker above 100Hz. apps@contechity.com Thank you!

Works as advertised

I was able to figure out which rooms had flickering lights and which didn’t. The app properly detected the rooms I was suspect of flickering, having seen them flicker in slow motion videos. Great app!

Response from developer

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with the app - it is very much appreciated!

Crashing for me on the first screen

The first screen is a buy screen to pay or agree to subscribe to a trial before using the app or even seeing it

The app showed the payment screen only a few times but no buttons worked, it just crashes if I click anything

I haven’t had an app crash on iOS in so long I didn’t actually realize what happened. I rebooted my phone. It’s up to date.

Now on subsequent launches, this crashes immediately after opening now without showing a buy screen

This PWM tester app is a great idea but the dev seems so intently set on getting money from every single user and ensuring they know you will pay on the first launch they should just make this a pay app not In App Purchases

Again, this app does nothing unless you open your wallet or agree to a trial, but that didn’t work for me so it just does nothing

Response from developer

Oh, I am so sorry for this! Thank you so much for reporting. Actually the app can be used for a few weeks without signing up to anything - simply tap close on the paywall. But the crash is serious. Would you please send me an email so that I can learn more about it and fix this issue? It would be very valuable as I really would like to correct this! apps@contechity.com And of course I will give you a full refund. Sorry again! BR, Björn

Great program
Thank you!

Real time rating

iOS 18.5 iPhone 13 pro

Great

Works great

UPDATE: much improved

After my initial non-positive review, the developer contacted me and put a lot of work into improving the app’s performance on my iPhone Mini 13. The new version is much more useful. Measuring flicker seems to be a hard problem because use conditions matter a lot, but within that limitation I can now say the app does what I had hoped. Four stars for performance, five stars for developer responsiveness.

Thanks a lot for reporting the problem initially and assisting me in tracking it down, so that I could solve it and make the app better for everyone! Users like you are invaluable in the development process.

Worried about LED light flickering? Test it with this app

Works brilliantly. Turns out my LED lights have almost no flicker, but the fluorescent lights in the bathroom are a flicker nightmare. Now I know!

Works great

Works better than expected, does one thing and does it well. No nonsense. Wish more apps were like this.

Response from developer

Thank you so much for the kind words and the 5-star review! I’m thrilled to hear that Flicker Meter exceeded your expectations and that you appreciate its simplicity and focus. You made my day! If you ever have any suggestions for improvements or new features, feel free to share them. Thanks again for your support! – apps@contechity.com

Not suitable for my intended use case

I had hoped this app would warn of light sources that would cause banding in photo/video applications, but no such luck. Even when measuring light sources that I know to have a lot of flicker (e.g. cheap big-box-store LED fixtures) it measures little to no flicker.

Response from developer

Thanks a lot for your review. Your results actually surprises me. What device did you use the app on? It would be interesting to track this thing down. Feel free to write directly to me at apps@contechity.com Thanks a lot!

Simple app that does one thing well

This is a simple app that does one thing well. It’s easy to use and understand. I’d love to be able to see the sine wave in a separate window, if the developer wants to add that feature in the future. Handy, simply, and one of the few currently available apps that read flicker. Well worth the price.

Thanks a lot for your review! Would you please let me know the reasoning behind why it is useful to have the sine wave in a separate window? Or is it that you want to be able to hide the sine wave? Please write to me at apps@contechity.com Thank you so much!

Useless

Does not show frequency, rendering the ap useless

Response from developer

The latest version of the app is capable of estimating the frequency of the flickering. Feel free to try it out and let me know what you think! Thank you! apps@contechity.com
