About

FloraOfShanhai is a quiet reading and note-taking companion for the plants of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, one of the oldest surviving works of Chinese geography and myth. Every entry is written fresh in English and paired with an original ink-wash illustration. Nothing here is a scan or a reprint. The passages are retold in plain language, and the commentary is our own. WHAT YOU CAN DO Flora Library Browse illustrated entries for each plant, with its category, source chapter, appearance, colors and symbolic meaning. Search by name, category or symbolism, or narrow the list by category. Classic Texts Read the passage behind each plant alongside a plain-language reading, its key terms, and a short background note explaining why the entry matters. Mountain Regions Explore the plants book by book: Southern, Western, Northern, Eastern and Central Mountains, plus the Lands Beyond the Seas. The structure follows the original text rather than a modern map. Botanical Notes Write your own notes on habitat, mythic meaning, legends and references. Link a note to any plant, then edit or delete it whenever you like. Bookmarks Save any plant, passage or note. Organize your collection with custom tags, add a private reading note, and sort by newest, oldest or name. DESIGNED TO STAY OUT OF THE WAY Works completely offline. No internet connection is needed. No account, no sign-up, no ads. Nothing is collected, tracked or uploaded. Your notes and bookmarks stay on your device. No permissions are requested. A NOTE ON THE CONTENT The Classic of Mountains and Seas is an ancient work of mythology and imaginative geography. Descriptions of what a plant does, whether easing hunger, guiding a traveler or relieving an ailment, are recorded here as literature and folklore. They are not medical, nutritional or botanical advice, and no plant described in this app should be sought out, gathered or eaten.
