Reinstated my subscription

Update to my review :
I am changing my four stars to five stars and I reinstated my annual subscription, because it’s MY FAULT, not the App.
I misunderstood. This is not a “Ground School” app. This is a series of questions and answers to prepare you for the FAA exam, AFTER you have completed a Ground School.

Response from developer

Thanks for the thoughtful review, Brett, and for the 4 stars even after canceling! You're right that FlyCowboys works best alongside ground school, not instead of it, and we should make that clearer for students who are just starting out. We're working on making the early experience friendlier for beginners so it doesn't feel like guessing in the dark. Best of luck with Sporty's, and when you're ready to lock in what you've learned before the written, we'll be here.

Could be great

Format is great. Fun. Engaging and even addictive with gamification. The problem is that some of the multiple choice questions covering complex topics are made to be so easy because the distractors are so bad. It will be three simple one word answers and the fourth will be a detailed paragraph that is clearly correct. Once that pattern is noticed, it's impossible to not just go straight to the longest answer option. And that makes this app almost useless. And so easy to fix. Put some effort into the dostractors.

Response from developer

Thanks for this, it's exactly the kind of feedback we need. You're right that when the correct answer is the only detailed option, the question stops testing knowledge. We're rewriting distractors so every option is similar in length and detail, and plausible enough that you have to actually know the material. Expect this in an upcoming update. If you spot specific questions that still give it away, email us at howdy@flycowboys.io and we'll prioritize them. Appreciate you pushing us to make it better.

Decent

Great idea but at the end of the day its basically a sheppard air knock off that is much more expensive. Really wish it was free and supported with ads because it has potential but the cost is far too steep

Response from developer

Thanks for the honest feedback, and for seeing the potential! Sheppard Air is a great resource for memorizing the written test, and plenty of our students use both. FlyCowboys is built for a different job: getting you through your whole training, not just the knowledge test. That's why it includes Talk to Tower (AI radio practice with ATC), flight logging, and an adaptive system that targets your weak areas so you study less and retain more. On price, we hear you. Our reasoning is that one extra lesson or a failed checkride costs more than a year of FlyCowboys, so if it saves you even one of those, it's paid for itself. If cost is the sticking point, the annual plan brings the monthly price way down and includes a free trial. We'd love to earn those other stars. Reach out at howdy@flycowboys.io and tell us what would make it worth it for you. We read everything.

Study on your time!

As a CFII, I want students to explain their thinking, not just pick the right answer. That’s what I like about FlyCowboys: the emphasis on explanations, oral prep, and practicing radio calls gives students more ways to engage with the material.

I see it as a useful supplement to ground school and time with an instructor. Having practice available on your phone makes it easier to keep studying between lessons. Understanding takes repetition, and this makes that repetition more approachable.

Response from developer

Thank you! Hearing this from a CFII means a lot. "Understanding takes repetition" is exactly the idea behind FlyCowboys. We don't want to replace ground school or time with an instructor. We want to make the time between lessons count, so students show up better prepared. Thanks for recommending it as part of the toolkit, and if you ever have ideas for how we can better support instructors and their students, we'd love to hear them at howdy@flycowboys.io

Actually fits into my day

I hesitated because I already had PPL study materials and wasn’t sure I’d use another app. What made this useful was being able to get some practice in when I had a few spare minutes. Those smaller sessions helped me study more consistently alongside ground school. For me, the value has been making it easier to keep going.

Response from developer

Thanks for giving us a shot even though you already had study materials! This is exactly what we built FlyCowboys for: a few minutes here and there that add up to consistent progress. Consistency beats cramming every time. Keep stacking those sessions, and good luck on your checkride!
