When do we land, and what is that down there? FlyETA answers both from your phone's own GPS, in airplane mode, on a 3D globe of the whole planet that is already inside the app.
Look out at a river, find it on the globe and read its name. Check your arrival time and settle back. It needs no cabin Wi-Fi and works with no download at all.
WHAT IS DOWN THERE
- Towns, lakes, rivers, peaks and borders named on the 3D globe as you fly over them, and the countries under your track
- More than 470,000 named places in the map that comes with the app: cities, mountain peaks, lakes, ranges and seas
- Terrain for the whole planet from Copernicus elevation data and ESA WorldCover land cover. Sharper terrain for your route downloads when you set up a flight with a connection: always, on Wi-Fi only or never, as you choose in Settings.
WHEN YOU LAND
- Arrival time, time to go and distance to go
- On routes with recent flights, the forecast follows the past flight most like yours. FlyETA collects these flights every day from open ADS-B data, for more than 20,000 routes, and loads your route's when you set up the flight with a connection.
- Without them it uses a general flight model, which cannot see wind or holding
- Flight phase: on the ground, climb, cruise, descent
- The phase, arrival time and time to go on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island
THE WHOLE PLANET IN 3D
- Chase the airplane, orbit it, or pinch in to the cockpit and turn to the wing, with its engines turning and its lights flashing
- Contrails at cruise height, the atmosphere on the horizon, and the stars and the Milky Way when you zoom out into space
- Your past flights glow on the home globe and fly again as it turns
- At most 30 frames a second, fewer when the phone runs warm and none while the globe is still, to save battery
FOR THE CURIOUS
- Altitude above mean sea level, ground speed, vertical speed and track
- Cabin pressure altitude and a turbulence reading
- GPS tools: heights above sea level and the ellipsoid, every accuracy figure, and a map with the accuracy ring
- Metric, imperial or aviation units, globe layers for cities, countries, borders, rivers, peaks and airports, and 10 languages
KEEP EVERY FLIGHT
- Start following and FlyETA records the flight, with the screen locked too
- If the app is closed in the air, the recording resumes when you open it again
- Replay any flight at 1x, 10x, 60x or 300x
- A passport with a stamp for each airport, a page for each country, and badges
- Add a flight you took but did not record. It counts in the passport and replays as a labelled simulation.
- Every recording is a readable JSON file in the Files app
TRY IT BEFORE YOU FLY
Pick any two of more than 4,000 airports and tap Simulate to watch the flight on the globe. Its heights and speeds are modelled, and the flight is labelled Simulated. Values only a phone in the air can measure show "--".
HONEST ABOUT WHAT IT CAN SEE
Position, height and speed come from your phone's own sensors, not from the aircraft. Reception varies with your phone, the aircraft and your seat; a window seat gives the phone a better view of the sky. FlyETA follows the flight you are on: it shows no gates, delays or other aircraft. Where a value is unknown, it shows "--" instead of a guess.
FREE, AND YOURS
Every feature is free: no in-app purchases, no subscription, no ads, no account. FlyETA never sends your position and uploads no flight. With a connection it sends the route's two airport codes, the names of the terrain squares the route crosses and the app and iOS version to tower.flyeta.app, and a flight number you type to api.adsbdb.com. In airplane mode it sends nothing.
REQUIREMENTS
iPhone 15 or newer, or an iPad with an A13 chip or newer, on iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or newer. Live following needs GPS: an iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular. A Wi-Fi-only iPad can simulate and replay flights.
FlyETA is a personal project by Nick Bubelich, who wanted these two answers on every flight he took.
