About
Focale trains two things at once: how fast you can take in a glimpse, and how wide
your attention can stretch while you do it.
Every trial is one moment. A vehicle flashes at the centre of the screen. At the very
same instant, a small ring appears somewhere around the edge. Then both are gone, and
you answer for each: which vehicle, and where was the ring.
You cannot solve this by looking twice. The flash is over before your eyes could move.
The only way through is to stop hunting and let your attention widen — which is exactly
the thing that gets better with practice.
IT GETS HARDER, EXACTLY AS FAST AS YOU DO
Focale adapts every few trials. A good run shortens the flash and adds clutter to the
field; a couple of slips ease it back. Early levels are comfortable — around half a
second. Past level 60 you are working in hundredths of a second, with a mask that wipes
the afterimage the instant the flash ends, so there is nothing left to read off.
There is no wall and no "you lose". The difficulty simply sits wherever you are.
TWO GAMES
Focale — the full task: centre and edge, together.
Reflexe — the other half of perception. Several vehicles flash; tap the instant you spot
a car among them, hold still if there is none. Colour helps at first, then it stops
helping and you have to search by shape. It trains speed, visual search, and the harder
skill of not moving when you shouldn't.
Two sprint modes let you drill the centre or the edge on its own.
WHAT YOU GET BACK
- Your level, the flash length you are catching, and accuracy, live while you play
- A daily goal and a streak, with a freeze so one missed day doesn't erase a month
- Records, achievements, and a weekly challenge that is the same for everyone
- Where you miss: which parts of the ring you are slowest to notice
- A shareable summary card
- Research notes explaining what each part of the task is drawn from
BUILT TO BE QUIET
No account. No ads. No tracking. No network. Nothing leaves your phone, because there
is nowhere for it to go — your progress is stored on the device, and the only way to
move it is the backup you export yourself.
Up to three people can share the app, each with their own levels, streak and settings.
Light and dark, larger text and buttons, reduced motion, slower timing, and an optional
soundtrack that you can turn off entirely.
A NOTE ON WHAT THIS IS
Focale is a training exercise built on the design principles behind lab tasks in visual
attention — brief exposure, backward masking, divided attention, go/no-go. It is not a
clinical assessment, not a medical device, and not a validated intervention. It does not
diagnose anything, and getting better at Focale is evidence that you have got better at
Focale. Play it because the moment of catching a 40-millisecond flash is a genuinely
good feeling.
