Your PDF never leaves your device. Foliato is a full set of PDF tools that runs locally: nothing is ever uploaded, no server, no account.
PASSWORD-PROTECTED PDFs
Open password-protected PDFs in the viewer and in every tool, protect a PDF with a password (AES-256) or remove a password, or the restrictions on printing, copying and editing. Foliato asks for the password once and works on a copy in memory, and when you edit a protected PDF with another tool, the result keeps its password. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying open without asking for anything. Sign with certificate also signs a protected PDF, and it stays protected. Everything happens on your device: a PDF password is never saved and never sent anywhere. If a PDF carries digital signatures, Foliato warns you first: protecting it or removing its password rewrites the file, and its signatures are no longer valid afterwards.
VIEW & OPEN
Open any PDF straight from Files, Mail or another app. Foliato registers as a PDF viewer with continuous scroll, pinch-to-zoom and selectable text. Pages fit the width of your screen, the way a reader should.
DIGITAL SIGNATURES: READ AND CREATE
Inspect the digital signatures a PDF carries: who signed it, with which certificate, whether the document changed after signing, whether the certificate chain holds together and, if you leave it on in Settings, whether the issuing authority has revoked the signer's certificate. For that check Foliato sends only the certificate's serial number, never the document. The app always tells you what it checked and what it did not: a certificate not being listed as revoked does not mean it can be trusted.
You can also sign. Use your own digital certificate (.p12 or .pfx, for example from the Spanish FNMT) to sign a PDF with a real cryptographic signature in the standard PAdES format, with an optional visible stamp on one, several or all pages. When online, the signature includes a timestamp and Foliato first checks that the certificate has not been revoked; offline, it still signs. You can save your certificates encrypted on the device, but the password is never saved: it is asked for on every signature. It is an advanced electronic signature, not a qualified one.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No accounts, no ads, no analytics. Every merge, split and signature happens on your phone or tablet, and every tool works offline. PDF passwords are never stored and never leave your device. Only two features look things up online, and only when you use them: signing with a certificate (timestamp and revocation check) and the revocation check when you open a signature, which you can turn off in Settings. Neither ever sends your document or your full certificate.
