About

Fretboy is a practice tool for guitarists who want to see the neck rather than memorize shapes. Pick a key and a mode and the whole fretboard is mapped: roots, the notes in the scale, and a five-fret position box you move by tapping a note. The modes run brightest to darkest — Lydian to Locrian — because that is how they are actually learned, each step down flattening exactly one note. Scales are spelled properly, by walking the letters, so G Lydian has a C# and never a Db. Practice gives you the seven chords of the key as arpeggios, common chord progressions, the circle of fifths, and runs you can play at tempo. The tuner is built on autocorrelation rather than a spectrum, so a plucked low E reads as a low E and not as its own harmonic an octave up. It shows a strip of neighboring notes sliding past a fixed center, so you can see which way a string has gone and how far. Standard, Open G and DADGAD. The reference pitch moves if you need it to, and tapping a string plays it so you can tune by ear. Point it at a song and it will tell you what key the room is playing in. It offers the relative major or minor alongside its answer, always, because those two share the same seven notes and no microphone can tell them apart — the person holding the guitar can. Everything runs on the device. There is no account, nothing is recorded, and nothing you play leaves your phone. It works on a plane and in a garage with no signal.
