About
You cannot buy a gun in California until you pass the FSC test. Thirty questions at the dealer counter, twenty three right to pass, and you find out how it went standing in front of a stranger with a line behind you.
Practice here first. Then test day is the second time you have seen it, not the first.
WHAT YOU ARE WALKING INTO
The Firearm Safety Certificate exam is a written test given at the dealer by a DOJ certified instructor. Thirty questions, true or false and multiple choice, 75 percent to pass, and the card is good for five years. You need to be 18 and bring your California driver license or state ID.
Miss it and the $25 fee covers a second attempt, but not for another 24 hours. That means driving back another day. Most people would rather get it right the first time.
258 QUESTIONS, SIX TOPICS
Gun safety rules. Handling and operation. Firearms and children. Storage, transport and ownership. California gun laws and buying a firearm. Plus a bonus range and first aid topic that is not on the official test.
Every question is written in plain English from the California DOJ Firearm Safety Certificate study guide, with the source behind it attached, whether that is the study guide, the law it comes from or the DOJ's own published answer, and often the exact chapter or Penal Code section. No riddles, no trick wording, no law left sitting at whatever it said years ago.
STUDY THE WAY YOU ACTUALLY STUDY
Quick rounds when you have five minutes in a parking lot. A full timed mock exam the night before, 30 questions in 30 minutes at the real pass mark, once you unlock the full version. A question a day with a streak if you booked the appointment weeks out.
Get one wrong and it comes back. The app keeps every mistake and drills you on those until they stop being mistakes. That is the whole trick to passing a test like this, and it takes an evening, not a week.
Area by area stats show where you are weak, so you stop re-reading the parts you already know.
THE PART NOBODY WARNS YOU ABOUT
Passing the written test is not the last step. Before the dealer hands anything over you have to physically demonstrate safe handling in front of the instructor and sign an affidavit saying you did. Open the action, check the chamber, keep it pointed somewhere sensible, load and unload.
This app walks you through those steps too, so you are not learning them at the counter.
READ IT INSTEAD, IF YOU PREFER
Seven handbook chapters cover the same ground as the questions. Read it straight through if that is how you learn, or skip it and drill.
PRICE
The free version gives you 21 questions, seven each from the first three topics, plus all seven handbook chapters, the question of the day drawn from the whole bank, and drilling on your mistakes. No account, no trial, no card. If it works for you, one payment unlocks all 258 questions, the last three topics and both mock exams, forever.
One payment, not weekly. You take this test once every five years, so paying every week for it never made sense.
No ads. Works offline. Nothing to sign up for.
Every question on the five test topics follows the California DOJ Firearm Safety Certificate Study Guide, a free download at oag.ca.gov/firearms/fsc and the material your test at the dealer is drawn from. Around it you get illustrated handbook chapters, diagrams of the parts and the safety rules, drilling on everything you got wrong, and a step by step route to the certificate, from the written test to the safe handling demonstration at pickup.
Good luck at the counter.
