About
Gam is a small, friendly way to start speaking Teochew (Chaozhou / Chaoshan, 潮汕话) — the language of eastern Guangdong and of Teochew families all over Southeast Asia and the world.
Follow Gam, a little New Year mandarin, through the words and phrases you would really use at the family table:
• 171 everyday words — people, food, actions, numbers, time, places
• 216 phrases — greetings, thanks, “have you eaten?”, and more
• Every word taken apart: initial, final and tone, with a plain-English note on how each one sounds
• Peng’im, the standard romanisation for Teochew, next to every character
• Eight tones, drawn as pitch curves, and how they change when words run together (tone sandhi)
• Short drills — pick the meaning, pick the word — that come back to what you missed
• Streaks, mastery dots and a progress page, so you can see yourself improving
The standard here is the Chaozhou prefecture-city accent.
