Fun and enlightening
This brilliant little app lets you do two complementary things: First, it lets you take any image and convert into a symmetrical pattern — a “tiling” or “wallpaper pattern”. Second, it lets you take any such pattern and figure out its symmetries. For the latter, it provides just the right amount of guidance, helping you to work systematically but leaving it to you to find all the symmetries. I especially like how, as you search for each symmetry, the app shows a ghost image of the transformed pattern on top of the original: when the ghost and the original match up, you've found a symmetry! Lots of fun, and an effective introduction to the concept of symmetry and how it appears in the world.
