GCB App

One word…Useless!

Downloads are always delayed

Downloads are always late to be downloaded compared to the Courier Mail, Herald Sun.

App is unreliable & customer service worse

Problems, problems and more problems using app on iPhone. All current iOS and app software. Has never worked on one of our phones, and after two years doesn’t work on another. Request support help from News Corp and copy and paste responses are irrelevant and useless.

Waste of money

Fine if you want biased conservative opinions instead of actual news, yet another LNP mouthpiece. Same old articles for days.

Great paper but….

Each days paper doesn’t load automatically into my library. It used to, but doesn’t anymore. The Courier Mail app, which is made by the same corp., is much better- I’d recommend it over this one.

hard to cancel

You can’t cancel your subscription through the app, you need to call them to cancel it. Guess what no one answers the phone

This

Is all goods

A bit ordinary

Loads of content but no search function. I was trying to find an article and just had to crawl menu pages.

Mobile app slow and some pages just didn’t load (yes, my internet is working fine).

Slow

When accessing customer account function, it takes several goes and many minutes to get in. Painful.

Bugs galore

Very buggy. It freezes constantly when I try to access the full story. Very poor performance.

Not great

Consistently opening articles to a blank screen, app shuts off. Have to restart the app each time. Considering subscription fee, not really up to scratch.

Great paper but….

Each days paper doesn’t load automatically into my library. It used to, but doesn’t anymore. The Courier Mail, but there “sister” paper doesn’t. Just replace this dinosaur App with the same as CM?

Fix your subscription

Shouldn’t have to phone to cancel subscription. Sort it out

Worst Version

When are you ever going to fix this app?

Very average

Not a great app. Random old content appears at times. Would be good for news stories to contain dates so you know what you read is relevant. Also very limited news content available. You are far better off accessing via a website rather than the app. Have never been able to access certain news sections. Would be good to be able to access other newspapers not just the Gold Coast Bulletin via the app.

Backwards Step

This version is a backwards step as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t remember where you left off, with the previous app you could close the iPad, come back later and carry on, with this you have to start again.

I find I have to actually close the app to get it to refresh, it stays on the previous publication.

Another annoying thing is you seem to have lost screen space top and bottom as it doesn’t go full screen.

Let’s go back to the previous version please…

Bars

The latest update is in general quite good, but please, how do I get rid of the annoying top and bottom bars which take up a great deal of reading space.

Version 7.25: bug report + OK app + how to make it better

NOTE: this review is about the subscribed version.

BUGS: The "Enable auto download" option, when activated, fails to download all the sections. Please fix.

PROS:
Great layout that’s clean and pleasing to the eye.

The “Best Of Gold Coast” section is terrific, with plenty of positive stories.

Works great in portrait and landscape, which not all news apps do.

The coloured cross indicates when a story is for subscribers only - although it would’ve been nice to explain this when first using the app.

HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER:
Add a search function - it should be standard on all news apps.

Settings should have its own button, instead of being hidden away near the bottom of the “All sections” tab.

The comments section is a joke - replace it with a third-party service, like Disqus.

Add more subscriber options - what if someone only wants to read the current edition, or only weekdays, or only the Saturday edition? The monthly payments should reflect these preferences.

Tapping the “My news” tab should make the page scroll to the top. This is a common function on apps.

Add an "auto-delete downloads never" option, for those of us who want to keep editions.

When tapping on the search icon, put the cursor in the search bar so that we can type straight away.

Get rid of the “__ m/h ago” from recent headlines - change it to the date-and-time that it was posted instead, so that there’s no confusion.

Stop all videos from auto-playing, we know how to press play.

Get rid of the related videos at the top of some articles, it’s confusing. Put the videos at the bottom of the articles, under “Related stories.”

CONCLUSION: an OK app, with plenty of room for improvement. If you liked this review, please long-press it and mark it as “helpful.”
