I want to start off by saying (1) I know Grouse House doesn’t have a huge budget for app development (2) I know making native apps for several platforms is expensive
But wow this app sucks. This has to be a web view pretending to be a native app (or some garbage write once run everywhere platform like React), because nothing works well.
- When watching something in fullscreen, the video isn’t properly centered, so the right edge gets slightly cut off and the left edge has a strip of the app’s purple background showing through.
- When you search for something, it displays “sorry, it looks like that isn’t available” while it loads the results.
- When paused, the video is “tinted” with a translucent black box that covers some of the screen, but the box isn’t actually aligned with the video. Also, the entire box is tappable to play the video (instead of just the play icon) and it lingers for a few seconds after you resume. If anyone’s used YouTube/Netflix/Nebula/any streaming service on iOS, you know that tapping far away from the pause icon after resuming a video is supposed to dismiss the icon and tint, but instead this app pauses the video (because again, the entire screen acts as the play/pause button)
- For whatever reason it briefly pauses/unpauses when you swipe up to go to the home screen
- This isn’t an iOS issue but it’s a huge inditement of the Apple TV app that AirPlaying from the iOS app to the Apple TV provides a nicer, smoother interface than using the actual Apple TV app
A barebones app using basic system controls would be so much nicer than this mobile web view masquerading as an iOS app. But I’ll still use it because I love the content so much
