About

A map of Gyeongju for travellers who do not read Korean. Most of what is worth seeing in Gyeongju sits within a few kilometres of the old centre. The signs, the bus displays and the shop hours do not. THE MAP Heritage sites and landmarks, named and described in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Restaurants and cafés, coloured by their Google rating. One layer holds the things you look for when something goes wrong — convenience stores, pharmacies, ATMs, toilets, luggage drops, information desks. Another holds bus stops, city bikes and rental shops. A With kids layer marks 13 places to take children. BUSES THAT ARE ACTUALLY MOVING Arrival times from the national bus feed, the route drawn stop by stop with where to get on and off, and the buses from Gyeongju Station (KTX) into town. Stop names are romanised, so the name on the sign is the name on the screen. OPEN NOW Switch to the night layer and the map keeps only what is open at this hour: bars, convenience stores, pharmacies. THE WALK TO IT Pick a place and the map draws the way from where you stand, with the distance and the minutes. Over eight kilometres it says so rather than pretending you will walk it. A CARD FOR THE TAXI DRIVER Where you are going, in Korean, big enough to hold up. SURVIVAL KOREAN 57 phrases for restaurants, your stay, shopping, buses and taxis, sights and asking for help, each with a pronunciation guide. Star the ones you will need. Show large puts the Korean on the whole screen for someone to read. WEATHER The next 24 hours hour by hour, then day by day up to ten days ahead, from the Korea Meteorological Administration. WHAT'S ON Performances at Gyeongju Arts Center and festivals around the city, by date. WHAT TO EAT Gyeongju dishes and Korean staples, each with what it actually is and a photograph. Ordering in instead: which delivery apps read your language, and your address written in Korean to paste into them. YOUR OWN COURSE Keep places as you find them. The app puts them in walking order and numbers them on the map. WITH NO SIGNAL Heritage, restaurants and essentials stay readable offline. The map shows what it last saved and says that is what it is showing. Languages: English, 日本語, 中文, 한국어.
