Marvelous app
I never review anything but I had to for Hanly. Hands down the best app of its genre and it’s crazy that it’s all free. Thank you to the developers and educators behind it 🫶
Fantastic gem
Highly recommend!! So useful and learning so much every day. Thanks devs for making it free! Will subscribe when I have some cash!
Incredible
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed an app so much that I left it WITH MY OWN FREE WILL to go leave a positive review (there’s no “rate us now!” button, I came here on my own)
I use this app alongside Duolingo because Duolingo is really bad at making any sense of the characters. Something about the structure of this app just… clicks.
I really enjoy the examples of how you can remember something. At first, some of the memory recommendations seem corny, but boy are they effective.
I really enjoy the pacing of this app, bringing back old symbols occasionally for review while continuing to focus on the ones I struggle with. At this point, I’ve learned about 120 characters.
My Chinese co worker said that once I hit 1000, it will be similar to a grade-2 reading level, which I’m super excited about.
To whoever made this app, you are incredible, and I hope you continue on beyond this to introduce more characters because I don’t know what I’ll do without this once I learn the first 1000. If you ever post a link for donations, I’ll gladly contribute. If I meet you in real life, I’d buy you a beer (or coffee, or tea, or whatever)

Amazing
I'm learning fast and having so much fun doing it too
So far, I’m pretty impressed!
Very intuitive!
Outstanding
This is one of the best all-around apps I have ever used. It is intuitive, engaging, and excels at its purpose of teaching characters. The introduction of characters, nmemonics, options for pace of review, optional extra details, and occasional cutesy little side comments, are all very well done. I can’t believe it’s free.

Amazing app
I teach chinese to foreigners and this is an amazing app for my students and myself.
incredible learning tool
i've been trying to learn Mandarin for many years with minimal success and this is by far the best learning tool I've encountered so far. more people should know about this app. It was very clearly crafted as a labor of love. So much attention into the user experience. It is incredibly comprehensive and detailed yet also very fun. The use of spaced repetition and feeling that the app is guiding you patiently shows that the creator really understood language pedagogy. Can't recommend enough!

Makes learning Chinese characters easy and fun
I love the sequential aspect of this app. It makes it like reading a story book. All characters that you learn build upon the knowledge the app teaches you in order. Incredible app!!
Great balance
Has the same methodology of remembering the kanji, the similar building approach as wanikani, and an srs from Anki. It strikes a great balance of pulling all the awesome tools the Japanese language community has had for a long time and brings them to Chinese. I also get legend of Zelda vibes from the UI for some reason, I wonder if that inspired it.

Great app!
Great pacing, customizable, and effective. Can’t imagine a better way to start learning Chinese
Makes learning Chinese so much easier!
I’ve tried learning Chinese by using other software and apps, and the problem I kept running into is not being able to tell the difference between some of the words. A lot of the words sound the same and have characters that are very similar in appearance, and I kept getting those words confused. I also could not look up any of the Chinese words in the dictionary. I decided it would help if I first learned the parts, or components, of each character but couldn’t find a very productive way of doing that. It was so time consuming. Until I found this app, which breaks down the characters for me. Finally! With this app I can learn to recognize the components of the characters first, then the characters themselves along with the sounds they make, and the meanings. Then I can start putting the words together into sentences (using the reader that is built into the app) and then it will make sense to me. What makes this app so much better is the approach. This gives you the foundation you need to know in order for the words and sentences to make sense later on. I wish I would have started with this app years ago. This will make learning Chinese so much easier!

Hanly is amazing
I seldom care enough to write reviews. Hanly is so good that I feel compelled to write one. So much thought went into this app and it does exactly what it sets out to do. Without a doubt, this is an essential app for learning Chinese.
Best App Ever
Tried tons of other apps to learn Chinese, but they just weren't as well organized not structured. The visual aspect of the app makes it very easy to and digestible to learn. Great for anyone at almost any level.
Love it
It’s like a better version of wanikani
Great method to learn foundations; Chinese Cursive?
I’ve been enjoying using this app to review the basic radicals and become more familiar with deciphering unknown characters. I just wanted to note that the other day my younger brother was watching over my shoulder while I was reviewing flashcards and despite having no experience with Chinese he was able to quickly separate character components (eg the various forms of 手 or 水). I think this is a testament to how the app can make learning characters possible - and fun! - even for complete beginners. It should definitely be advertised as a pathway to learning Chinese even for those new to the language because it responds to the reason many learners begin their journey with Chinese - interest in the character system.
Something that I think would be neat for future features would be to include lessons or another learning mode on Chinese cursive. Given that the app already integrates bronze script I think this fits with the function of the app. It could be as simple as providing an option in the setting tab to switch to a more handwritten/script style font or as complex as adding another pathway to exploring stroke order.

This makes learning characters feel more intuitive
Although I wish there were an option to have traditional characters as the primary and for them to have the same decomposition/primitive info and characters they appear in if the mode was on.
easy to use
started using this a couple weeks ago and I’m already up to 20+ characters memorized it’s got a great algorithm
