About
The Harbor Currents tool is an app that displays water current forecasts in the Newark Bay area and broader New Jersey/New York Harbor. The app receives data from Stevens Institute forecast systems and displays near-surface currents in the form of arrows. These arrows point in the direction a given current is traveling in and are colored corresponding to the intensity of the current's speed. Tapping on the arrow will give the user more information on the current, including its speed and direction (degrees clockwise from north).
The user is able to switch between near-surface and mid-depth currents and different measurement units. The app also displays a chart comparing the model's predictions with observed data at NOAA’s Kill van Kull buoy 14 so users can assess the model's accuracy in the past day. The forecast data behind the app include (1) “regional” medium-resolution water velocity data from the Stevens Institute’s NYHOPS forecast system and (2) high-resolution (70 feet) data from a Bergen Point area model.
