About
You are in the aisle. A jar in one hand, your phone in the other, and a family waiting on dinner. Is it kosher?
Hey Kosher answers in seconds. Point your camera at the barcode and see a verdict for the tradition you follow, with the ruling or certification behind it.
SCAN
Aim at the barcode. Scanning happens on your phone, in the aisle, no waiting on a spinner. No camera, or a barcode that will not read? Type the number printed underneath.
FIVE TRADITIONS SIDE BY SIDE
Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Messianic, and Biblically clean (Leviticus 11). Pick the one you follow and switch any time. One scan shows how all five read the same product, listed side by side and never ranked. The toggle changes the lens, not the facts.
EVERY VERDICT NAMES ITS SOURCE
No bare yes or no. You will see "Kosher under the OU" or "Permitted per the CJLS ruling on gelatin", and you can open the ruling behind it. Where a tradition needs a hechsher (the symbol of the group that certifies a product as kosher), Hey Kosher will not guess from the ingredient list alone.
PASSOVER AND ORTHODOX SUB-OPTIONS
Turn on Passover mode to flag chametz and look for a Kosher for Passover mark. For the Orthodox lens, add chalav Yisrael (dairy that must carry a chalav Yisrael mark) or pas Yisrael (baked goods that must carry a pas Yisrael mark) for stricter standards.
ADD A PRODUCT IN A MINUTE
Scan something we have not seen yet? Hey Kosher checks Open Food Facts for a head start, then walks you through a few photos. It reads the ingredient list on your phone and helps identify the hechsher. Check what it read, fix anything it got wrong, and send it. Pareve (neither meat nor dairy), dairy or meat, and Kosher for Passover are yours to confirm. A reviewer checks every submission.
A LIBRARY THAT GROWS
Each product someone adds helps the next shopper. Browse the library by category, search by name, brand or number, and read the rulings behind the verdicts. Save products for later. Share a product with a link, so a relative can see exactly why something is or is not okay.
WORKS OFFLINE FOR RECENT SCANS
Products you have scanned recently stay on your phone, so a store with poor signal does not stop you. Something new will wait for a connection and tell you so.
FREE
Looking something up is free. There is no account to make, no email to give, and no ads.
AN HONEST NOTE
Hey Kosher is a reader of certifications and a library of rulings. It is not a halakhic authority. The agency or ruling body always has the final word, and when you are in doubt, ask your own rabbi or teacher. The Messianic tier is labeled "pending MJRC review". Some product data comes from Open Food Facts and is available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
