OnX Ruined This

Used to be a great app when REI owned it. Now OnX bought it and turned it into a nagware POS. Their own app is also a nagware wrapper around MapBox that you must pay for to see any info on any trails. Heck all these companies trying to profit from public parks and taxpayer-funded resources. Just go to OpenTrailMap.us instead. Don’t give private equity clowns more money for things you can get for free.

Unusable - crashes

App crashes every time I try to use it

Great app

This has so far been a great app and alternative to expensive hiking apps. No frills, great information a just what you need. Love it!

Crashes upon opening

This has been reported for over a year now, why is this app still available?

Fantastic platform, terrible app

I have been a member and a user for almost a decade, and I prefer Hiking Project over other hiking platforms and apps like All Trails. Unfortunately the app became completely unusable on iPhone because it just keeps crashing. Currently running iOS 18.6.2 (22G100) and just updated the app, and even reinstalled it, to no avail. It happened with earlier versions of iOS too. Please do something about it! I would hate to switch to All Trails.

Gone

Now that this app is bought out by OnX it’s only an ad platform for OnX. The app only show cursory info and keeps asking if you want to plan in 3D. No, I do not. I just need an easy place to search family hikes, not pay money forms access to knowledge.

Best hiking app ever!

Great hiking app! Has everything you need for some great times. And best part it’s Free! Puts AllTrails to shame.

Inaccurate on vertical

Skyline Traverse, Chicago Basin 14ers, and other known summits are wrong!!!

Latest update constantly crashes

Cannot zoom/pan nor go to other locations (to research trails ahead of time) other than centering on you gps location without crashing.

Very nice, with frustrating features

Accurate & easy to use while hiking. Sadly once you answer questions at the end & “Submit” your just finished trail can disappear and never return. Even if the App owners decide not to publish your hike, you should still be able to see where you have gone! Totally frustrating & this makes me want to continue to look at alternatives

Couldn’t get it to work

Having issues finding any trails

Used to be simple and great

This app used to be my go to hiking app, but its usefulness is mostly gone. When it was REI it was simple and great. Not it’s buggy and complicated.

Fails at its only job

Downloaded maps offline, then opened the app while there’s no signals, and the app just immediately crashes every time making it useless.

Updates?

Update 3/23, this app is basically useless now. Also seems the app is collecting more info than before it changed companies.. deleted

App hasn’t been updated in over a year and when I go to update trails for CA downloaded maps it says updated 08/02/19 :(

Just crashes at startup

This used to be my go-to app, but it just crashes at startup now

Crashes and won’t open

This app used to be great but now constantly crashes and won’t even open.

App has gone down hill

I used to love Hiking Project, and I still find it very useful but it has developed many serious issues.

First, the offline usability of the app is horrible. Which defeats the purpose of a hiking trail app. When you’re out of service the map layers won’t show up, you often can’t pull up the trail you’re on, can’t find other trail, etc. it becomes pretty useless when not in service which is 80% of the time I need to use it. This makes no sense especially since in order to look at trails in a specific stat you already have to download all of the information for that state!! So why is it not available offline?

Second, this app has developed serious crashing issues, specifically when out of service. Try to pull of your map and move it on the screen for two seconds, crash. Try to open up the information for that trail, crash. Even as I’m sitting here in my living room on WiFi I can’t open the app at all because it immediately crashes.

Lastly, an annoying usability problem is that when you have a trail open and lock your phone, when you open it again it has kicked you out of that trails page and back to the map so you have to find the trail again to try and open it. But with the crashing issues I talked about i am almost never able to open the trail long enough to see anything if at all.

It is a great app that just does not function properly at all especially when you need it the most.

App crashes

App crashes instantly even after reinstalling.

Potential

looks good, but idiotic synchronization for log-in. time for developer to realize it's the 1990's and there isn't a need to pop out of the app to a web interface to log-in.

can't log in after multiple attempts. glad it's free...
