Hip Licks for Tenor Sax (V1) User Reviews

Subtly very useful

At first, about a year ago when I got this app, I was slightly underwhelmed. However, after a year of practice, this turned out to be a great resource when I was struggling to find something to practice. This book is basically an archive of Greg Fishman’s vocabulary, and I think almost all jazz musicians can learn something from his style of phrases.

Where's the sound gone?

I have had all of these excellent apps for a while and they worked just fine until now. All of my iPad Greg Fishman apps run but for some reason no longer have sound!,, Did the reload thing to no avail. All my other apps seem to work fine?

Greg Fishman

Very intuitive! Are you a beginner to improvising ? Then this is a marvelous way to start. After learning a couple licks In every key you will be nailing the changes and sounding authentic to the tradition of Jazz.

Superb ideas

As an intermediate player I was struggling to build up a vocabulary of jazz phrases. Greg's app is filled with great sounding licks, all of which can be used as inspiration for further experimentation.
The format is very good, with the full book included as well as playalongs. There is also no space wasted repeating the same phrase in all 12 keys as many books do. You can still practice this way by playing each phrase along to the backing track in all keys, but Greg gives you a different starting phrase for each key.
This is the best book I have seen of this type, and great to have it as a portable app with the audio.

Excellent vocal selections, well worth the cost

This is a really nice alternative to a book, and I think Greg has really done an excellent job in choosing the licks. They are not the obvious simple root-centered lines you see in so many textbooks, but really musical lines more like stuff you'd transcribe from the greats. I've found lots that make me go "I'd never do that currently, I should really master that one."

Hearing them is really helpful too. The only things I think would improve it would be more control over the audio playback (say different speeds, muting parts of the rhythm section, etc). For the price, this is really high value. I will be buying his other works as well.

Mr

Excellent App, please add looping facility please ASAP, where you can loop any bar.

Great App and Great Customer Service

I purchased this app as a beginning sax player and just love it! I feel like I may actually be able to play one day.

I was having issues suddenly with the sound and sent Greg and email. He responded within minutes and had me back up and running. Turns out it was my mute button but Greg took the time to help me.

Thanks Greg for a terrific product and for the great customer service!

Good

I have a number of Greg Fishman books already, in fact I have the Hip Licks 1 and 2 books which come with both tenor and alto CD's. The reason I bought this app was so that I could practice using my iPad instead of my PC.
The app is easy to use and the quality of the backing tracks are excellent
It would possibly be advantageous to have a facility to slow down the tracks further and have the ability to loop different sections, which I can accomplish on my PC.
I look forward to further apps from the Greg Fishman range

It's all GREAT!

First of all, Hip Licks is an excellent, well designed and implemented tool for becoming more proficient as a saxophonist. Greg Fishman is not only a wonderful musician, he is a great teacher, and Hip Licks is a good example of his thorough approach to teaching the language of the saxophone.
This app contains the identical material as the original Hip Licks, and makes it even easier to use. I highly recommend Greg, his teaching materials, and his apps as being a fantastic way to learn, improve and/or maintain your skills. You won't be disappointed!

Hip Licks for Tenor Saxophone

I have recently downloaded 2 apps for ipad ( Hip Licks Vol #1 for both tenor and alto sax). They are simply so easy to use. I use them not only for myself but in my teaching studio using 2 ipads and 2 Gig Easy Stands. I didn't need to use the foot pedals as the apps change pages already and without a glitch. Greg Fishman is so far ahead of the curve with this technology stuff as well as the saxophone and jazz education in general. I highly advise the use of all his materials. Jimmy Las Vegas

The easiest way to practice!

This app is extremely well thought out and easy to use. I actually prefer it to the CD/Book version because of the ability to switch between tempos and accompaniment styles with a single touch. It's obvious that ease of use was of utmost importance because the controls are clean and simple to use. Of course, the content is amazing as well. Thanks for blazing this trail, and bringing your high quality jazz method into the digital age for all of us to enjoy.

You Need This App!

If you have been transferring PDF's to your iPad, as I have (using "forScore"), and using your iPad for just about everything, then you will love this app. The Hip Licks app is very intuitive and fun to use with my private students. I am able to mirror my ipad using AppleTV and project the music on a big screen. My students really enjoy this feature. You could also use this app in an improvisation class or jazz ensemble and project this on a Smartboard. Having the app will enable you to listen to the music when you are unable to practice. I find this to be a very useful feature. Read the description of the app. It gives you all the info you need. The book and the app are the same but the convenience, look and usefulness of the app makes it a must have. I highly recommend this as well as Greg's other apps and books.

Great Alternative to the Books!!

I have all of Greg's books, and have used them for some time now. The app is a copy of the book, but lets me easily take the exercises on the road, or call them up at home really easily. Works well with my Apple iTV... Can send it to my sound system via iTV very easily. Looking forward to the release of the other volumes too!
