False claims
It was a good learning app but I never received a notification 3 days before my trial ended. They claimed they would notify me, but it never came. As a result, I was charged $50 dollars without notice.

Trial reminder notifications are scheduled automatically, but they can only be delivered if notifications are enabled for the app and may also be affected by iOS notification settings. We understand how frustrating an unexpected charge can be. Subscription billing and refunds are handled directly by Apple, and you can request a refund through Apple’s “Report a Problem” service.
Exactly What I Needed
Most language apps throw way too much at you at once, this one keeps it simple. I like that I can add my pleco save to this app too,

very clear layout and simple UI
The tone trainer helps a lot
Learning tones was my hardest part, but the Foundations course with the tone trainer made it clearer. I can hear the native audio, then read and tap through pinyin while the app tracks my pitch. My pronunciation feels more consistent after a week of practice.
Works well for HSK study
I chose an HSK level and the vocabulary lessons matched what I’m studying. The placement option was straightforward, and each word comes with natural Mandarin audio plus example sentences. I also like the flashcard deck for reviewing specific weak spots after each lesson.
Good progress and review system
I’ve used other language apps that felt scattered, but Hourly Hanzi keeps things structured. Marking words as seen and the smart review practice helps me revisit tricky characters and phrases instead of forgetting them. Progress tracking makes it easy to know what I need to work on next.
Long onboarding and then forced paywall
It made you go through long onboarding, took my email, asked me many questions, asked for rating, and then shows you paywall, you have to pay to use

I have been super on and off with language learning but the widgets make learning a few words very passive. The little buddy is cute too. I’ll see how far I get with my learning
