HyperDrive HyperCube User Reviews

Needs a update badly

They sell the backup product & then never update their App. I’ll never buy anything from Hyper again.

Total Waste

App doesn’t work on any devices, support is worthless! What a waste of money!!

Stopped Working

Hasn’t been updated in almost a year, consider it unsupported now. Typical as well, hyper has over promised and stopped delivering. Avoid all of their “promises”.

1 star is too good

As time goes by, the app detects less and less videos when I try to transfer.

Hypercube

Sad to say I was an early supporter and tge app does not work. Very sad and mad

Close but not quite

I’m hoping these issues can be fixed! If so, then 5 starts for sure!

1. When I am browsing photos on the HyperCube, they look great. But when I share them or download them to my iPhone, they are suddenly blurry. I can’t figure it out, but I should be able to share or download the photos at the same quality they are being shown.

2. More often than not, the app will force close when I’m browsing directories on the SD card or the SSD Drive. Doesn’t happen all the time, but enough to be annoying. And often, if I need to leave the app, when I return to it, it has disconnected and needs to restart from the beginning. This is really annoying.

Other than these issues, the app works great, and it allows me to view content on drives via my phone.

Features I would love to see in the future:

1. I would love to see the grid display of photos and videos when browsing folders. Right now, this view is only available when browsing “all photos” or “all videos.”

2. I would love the ability to toggle showing hidden folders. Right now, there is no option to show hidden folders at all. Adding a “Show Hidden Folders” toggle switch would make the app super amazing.

Not fully “done” right

Device idea is great. App is horrible. Consistently crashes when forcing a manual back up and also never backs up in the background as advertised. Needs major overhaul.

Great idea, Terrible app

Ugh. Wanted to like this, but turns out to be another piece of junk. The app is so bad. I click on icons and nothing happens. It says searching and then just locks up. Really it’s a great idea, but the app makes the whole product unusable.

great concept, poor execution

I really like the idea behind this product, but while the hardware seems solid, the app is wildly inconsistent. When it works, the image backup creates oddly named files (versus a straight file export using a USB cable to a Mac). When it doesn’t work, there is frustratingly little feedback, and more often than not it just freezes. I’ve ordered a lightning to microSDXC device, and I’m hoping iOS 13 will do a better job at backing up images. Either that or back to the relative slog of wired-USB and/or wifi backups to my Mac.

Nice but not really

Cool idea to backup you photos. BUT: It saves the photos in HEIC not JPG. Also no edits that you do on the phone will be in the backup. Pretty useless when you want to transfer the photos to any other device.

Nothing

My experience was much the same The phone sees the hyper cube but nothing happens. I allowed all permissions but I am unable to backup anything. So for now it’s deleted

Crashes

Great idea but the software needs work. Crashed the first time I ran it. Second time it backed up the contacts successfully but crashed about 3% of the way through doing the pictures. When I ran it again it appeared to rescan the contacts properly but then it froze. This device is a great idea but clearly the software needs to be properly tested.

Feels like an alpha release

Hopefully they will improve the app. I’d to search online to find out your external storage needs to be MS DOS Fat 32 format to work. If they update the software to work with modern formats and Mac then this might become a good product. Right now it is a sometimes works proof of concept.

Nice device and app!

Works great!

Very pleased with this purchase and functionality.

Here’s some help, if needed.

PDF instructions can be found at hypershop dot zendesk dot com. I received an email last week with a link to their PDF instructions. Also very helpful is to watch the 9to5 mac video review of the Hypercube (which is how I heard about it).

How To:

Download app. Don’t open it yet.

Insert SD card into HyperCube (or other storage option).

Then plug the HyperCube usb male port into a power adapter. (I did what Jeff Benjamin did on 9to5 mac. I used an extension cord, plugged in a usb power adapter into the extension cord, then plugged the HyperCube usb into the power adapter.

Power light will come on.

Grab your usb to lightning cable. Plug the usb side of your lighting cable into the ORANGE USB SLOT on the HyperCube and plug the other end into your phone.

Launch the app.

You’ll be asked two permissions. One to access/backup photos, the other for contacts. I said yes to photos but no for contacts.

The screen then showed me there were no devices connected. So I unplugged the lightning cable and plugged it back into my phone, and viola, the app then recognized the phone.

From there you can browse the app. I went into settings and selected some preferences, such as auto-backup when I connect HyperCube You’ll see icons on the bottom of the app to browse photos, albums, etc. Select them and it will ask if you want to back them up, tap yes, and done!

That’s it! It works great!

Definitely check out the hypershop website for the PDF instructions to have for future reference.

Hope this helped.

And yes, I also agree with some reviewers that the instructions should have been included with the device. But they do exist if you go to their website.

Cheers!

This device is awesome once you figure it out

I read a lot of the reviews and was terrified that when I got the device it would be a total dud. The good news is it’s not. The bad news is it’s not intuitive at first. Here are a few tips that should fix the issues identified in other reviews. First, you have to plug the device into your iPhone charger not into your computer’s USB. Second you connect the iPhone to the device with the orange USB port and not the dark one. The flash drive plugs into the dark USB port on the device. Once that is done it works and then it is fairly easy to manage and use. The only issue I noticed is that it doesn’t play music off the external drive. It starts but then just stops. Not a big deal for me but as far as transferring videos and pics from the iPhone to the USB and vice versa back to the iPhone from the USB it works. It gets 4 stars because it should be more intuitive and the audio playback should work.

...wth

Installed the app, added microSD, and connected my cable to my phone. Nothing happens. The app says no device connected and nothing changes. If I plug the cube into my laptop, the microsd appears, but not even my phone can be seen with the cube in the middle. Wasted money.

Does. Not. Work.

Doesn’t work. App/phone does not even recognize it. A complete waste of money and time. Great idea using Kickstarter to fleece customers. All I want to do is find an easy and reliable way to preserve my photos...this is NOT it.

Works but lacks instructions

Took a while to figure out how it works. Finally found a YT video that explains it. Bought a micro SD chip, and was able to download pictures from iPhone and iPad.

Doesn’t work until you put a micro SD card in

This is an update to a 1star review I put up earlier. It’s actually pretty nice product. The app could use a little work to make it easier. I still haven’t figured out how to backup videos, but you can view them which is cool. I’ve backed up everything else with no problems. Id buy it again for sure.

Plug in your phone to the orange USB port!

One thing Hyper could do better is to provide some documentation. This device is simple but not fool proof.

I bet most of the one star reviews came from users who plug their phone to the white USB port which is intended for the flash drive.

The app is basic but works. I wish it has better support for automatic background backup once you plugin.
