72年手冢在《希望之友》上开始连载《佛陀》，通过对释伽摩尼传说故事进行了严肃的改编，将佛祖刻画成了有血有肉的少年，这种严肃的写实的风格在当时具有非常的现实意义。如果说在《铁臂阿童木》和《森林大帝》里手冢虽然也曾经批判，但毕竟主题还是美好向上并且有希望的，那么此时他要丢弃希望了，他要描绘真正的生活：“活着，是一件很辛苦的事情……”。他不再仅仅满足于对社会那种“希望”的主向了，而是将主题变为直接的“对抗”。
