About
Iris helps you see Japanese clearly. Watch a story, read a manga page or a classic, and tap any word: Iris shows how it reads, what it means right there, its JLPT level and pitch accent, and how its grammar fits the sentence. Keep the words you want, and My Sky brings each one back when your memory needs it.
WATCH WITH EVERY WORD TAPPABLE
• Iris Originals: short illustrated stories narrated in natural Japanese, from beginner to intermediate, with exact subtitles and translations.
• Your own videos: add a video from your phone with its subtitle file (SRT, VTT or ASS) and study the shows you own, privately.
• Community: learners share YouTube videos with Japanese subtitles. Reporting and blocking are always one tap away.
• Replay a line, loop it, pause after each line, slow down, and reveal the translation only when you want it.
READ MANGA AND BOOKS
• Import manga pages from Photos or a CBZ file. Iris reads the speech bubbles on your phone, vertical text included, and turns each bubble into tappable words.
• Classic stories from Aozora Bunko, with the authors’ own furigana.
• Paste any text: an article, song lyrics, a message.
MY SKY: REVIEWS THAT FIT YOUR MEMORY
• Every word keeps the sentence and the moment you found it in.
• Spaced repetition (FSRS) with Again, Hard, Good and Easy, the next interval on each answer, swipe answers and undo.
• Three ways to practice: see the word, hear it, or recall it from its meaning.
• A forecast, your retention and a calendar of reviews, and a night sky where each word brightens as you remember it.
• Export your words to flashcard apps or a spreadsheet, and bring them in from Iris for Chrome.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Japanese is analyzed entirely on your phone. Your videos, pages, texts and words stay on your device. No ads, no tracking, and no account needed; an account is only for sharing videos with the community.
Meanings in English, Spanish, French and German. Dictionary data from JMdict (EDRDG), JLPT lists by Jonathan Waller and pitch accents from Kanjium.

What's New in Iris
1.1.0
November 1, 2026
Read now has shelves like Watch: Iris Originals, Classics and Mine. Every classic has its own cover. Keeping a word feels like a small celebration, and new words shine as new stars in My Sky. Tabs stay in reach while you scroll, and buttons and cards respond more smoothly to your touch. Fixes: time spent watching, reading and reviewing now counts toward today's minutes, and the Keep in My Sky button no longer slips below the screen on long word cards.
