Perfect

Fun way to practice and very engaging.

Simple & Fun for Review!

Really like app! Super simple to use and decent free version before you have to pay. Really like it as a review for myself. One thing I will say is that the Kanji section seems to just be repeats of the same kanji on all the puzzles, which is kinda a bummer. Other than that it’s awesome!

Such a fun app! Really helps test your vocab

This app is amazing, I love doing crosswords in Japanese and this app allows me to test my vocabulary and kanji. I personally use it to work out what words I might not have learnt yet and then I’ll go learn them and put them into my SRS reviews. Only thing I feel the app might be missing is a random mode. Allowing you to select which JLPT level you want to play on and it’ll give you a random crossword rather than just the pre-made ones

Bought renshuu pro subscription

Hi so I bought the renshuu pro subscription and recently went onto the J crosswords app to see if I had unlocked more puzzles but it won’t show up. The renshuu app opened up a bunch of access for my current level (N5) but the J crosswords app doesn’t appear to be syncing properly?

Simple yet effective

This is one of my favorite apps for learning Japanese (and believe me, I’ve tried a lot or them)! There’s a ton of value with the free version, but the paid version is like $3 and you get puzzles with vocab, not only sorted by level (N5, N4, etc), but also by textbook (and further sorted by chapter!)
The crossword format is a novel concept and makes it fun to do vocabulary drills.
If you can’t tell already, I highly recommend this app for anyone learning Japanese, and especially for those learning via the popular textbooks! 👏

Thanks! Glad the puzzles are helping you out :) Should you need anything in the future, feel free to reach out to me at michael@renshuu.org!

Great for reviewing vocab!

If you like crosswords, this is a great app to use to consolidate your Japanese vocab! Fuss free and clean UI. However, the words tends to repeat a lot, making it a bit boring and I wish there was a feature to bookmark certain words for easier revision. I would recommend the app for people who are already learning Japanese — this app is for consolidation rather than learning. Even just the free version is nice and the full version is cheap too!

Thanks for the feedback! You are correct on both points: it is meant for review (our sister app, renshuu, is focused on acquisition). The word repetition is intentional - due to the short length of most Japanese words (in terms of characters), as well as the small number of words in some categories, it is actually quite difficult to make crosswords with most words, so I opted for more repetition so that the words can get firmly rooted in your head. That being said, if more crosswords are released in the future, I will definitely work to get a better balance :) Should you have any issues in the future, just let me know at michael@renshuu.org!

Don’t understand

When I downloaded it, it just gave me a word straight up. I didn’t understand it so I always had to guess.

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. The crosswords puzzle is designed to help review vocabulary, while our sister app (renshuu) introduces and teaches Japanese. I do appreciate you giving it a try, though! Should you need anything in the future, don't hesitate to let me know at michael@renshuu.org.

Highly recommend!!

It’s a great app and it’s very helpful. A quick and easy way to learn new vocabulary whilst also having fun!

Great Study App

I haven’t played much, but this app deserves more praise. I’ve been studying J4BP and have been looking for a fun way to study. This easily fills that gap.

I played through the free J4BP1 crosswords and checked out the kanji crosswords as well.

The crosswords followed the textbook pretty well, and based on the vocabulary list, it continues to. The app allows keyboard input, so you can go through the crosswords fast and without any hints. The UI is great both in and out of crosswords and very cute as well. The kanji crosswords are interesting and different enough to feel like a separate challenge, though it does lack N5 kanji puzzles. Overall, it’s clear a lot of time and effort went into making it a genuinely good study resource.

There are only two main problems:

The app requires you to pay either per module or for all puzzles to continue. This is understandable considering the obvious effort and that there are no ads, but wish it was a bit more upfront in the App Store as it’s nearly useless without paying.

There is no option to create a crossword of previously studied vocabulary. The crosswords are broken up into individual lessons and vocabulary is rarely used outside that lesson. There is no incentive to go back into completed ones as the crossword does not change. Essentially, the app is only good as supplementary material when initially learning and not for reviewing.

The app keeps track of vocabulary learned, so it seems like it could potentially add an option for creating a randomized puzzle based on previous vocabulary. I think this is an important feature and should be considered for future updates.

Despite these problems, I think this app is a great avenue for additional studying. Beginners should consider using this app to help them on their journey and spice things up a little when flash cards get boring.

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a detailed review! I really appreciate it. The N5 Kanji puzzles do not exist simply because there are not enough kanji compounds in JLPT N5 (let alone ones that overlap one another). While I understand your comment regarding the in-app purchases, I do not feel it's realistic to use the limited number of images and readable text (given that most users tend to not read past the initial few sentences) when I want to point out the cool things about the app. but, I do understand, and hope you feel the in-app purchases are correctly priced. Currently, rewriting the crossword creation system into the app is beyond the scope of what I am able to do, but I do agree - it would be excellent to add in the future should it become something I have time to do. Again, I thank you for the review! Should you have any other ideas or questions, I am always available at michael@renshuu.org.

Great way to get your brain moving

Love the puzzles. Thank you so much for making it. I really would love to see what it develops into.

I really appreciate that almost all of the popular Japanese textbooks are represented and the vocabulary from them can be practiced!

In the state the game is in it is fantastic. Just a few suggestions:
- adding a dictionary option, where you can save the words that you had trouble with
- ability to erase just one letter and not the whole word when you make a mistake
Sorry, if these features are already available and I am just to dull to see them....
Cheers! I shall keep playing.

Hello! Thanks for the review - I'm really glad it's helping out you in your learning. I'll keep the dictionary option in mind! The next thing we plan on adding is a couple more pictures to unlock, but I'm always thinking about additional features. It isn't documented, but there is a way to erase part of a word - it may or may not be what you're looking for. If you long press on a box, it'll erase that box and anything that comes after it. We currently already have tap and double tap assigned to other actions, so I'm not sure about the best way to add a "erase this box only". If you are using the drag and drop boxes (and not the type in), keep in mind that you can always draw them over a box to replace them. I hope this helps! Drop me a line at michael@renshuu.org if you have any other questions or suggestions.

Finally!

This is exactly what I have been looking for!

Great app!

This is a perfect app for practicing Japanese vocabulary. Very clean and easy to use, and a lot of cool stuff to unlock if you put some time into it. It’s easy to see that a lot of time and work went into it.

Great app to add to my practice

Really user friendly so I could jump right in. I also like that you can choose your desired level for the puzzles. Thank you!!

Simple, helps me study, and no ads!

This goes perfectly with my coursework since it builds the crosswords against chapters from the textbook I'm using. Looks like all the main textbooks are there. It's a lot more fun than what I was doing before I found this, that's for sure. Although I still use my textbook to memorize the material initially, these make it easy for me to stay engaged with the material over longer periods of time.

A wonderful app for word practice!

Recently I was looking for a puzzle game to play during breaks, and I found this one, which not only is a fun puzzle experience, but also great for reviewing Japanese vocabulary as well as learning new words! If you are a student of the Japanese language or want to learn some Japanese while doing crosswords, this is the app to get! It's very well-built and engaging. A solid 5 stars from me!
