About
Download Jietnašiella — share your story, shape tomorrow's Sámi services.
Help build better Sámi language technology by contributing short, secure speech recordings. Jietnašiella (Jietnasiella) is a free, open-source app created by the Divvun group at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway in collaboration with Nordic public broadcasters (including Yle Sápmi). The app collects Sámi language speech data to improve speech recognition, voice-enabled services (for example healthcare in your mother tongue), and other AI tools that understand and serve Sámi speakers.
WHY YOUR VOICE MATTERS
• Recordings from many speakers, ages and dialects make future services accurate and inclusive.
• Each sample — a memory, a fishing story, a nature description or everyday chat — helps preserve and strengthen Sámi languages for future generations.
• The project aims to collect 5,000 speech samples from adult Sámi speakers.
WHICH LANGUAGES
• North Sámi, South Sámi, Lule Sámi, Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi, Ume Sámi and Pite Sámi.
• Inari and Skolt Sámi are a particular focus in Finland.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
Sámi-speaking adults aged 18 and over. We welcome speakers of all fluency levels and dialects to ensure wide representation.
HOW IT WORKS
• Open the app and choose a theme (fishing, nature, childhood memories, everyday chat, etc.).
• Record a short speech sample.
• Your recordings are saved securely to the project server and used to train speech recognition and other language technologies.
PRIVACY, ETHICS AND DATA SECURITY
• No account, name or email address required — recordings are linked only to a randomly generated anonymous ID stored on your device.
• No tracking, analytics, advertising or cookies.
• Recordings are uploaded over HTTPS and stored securely in Microsoft Azure (EU/EEA region) with restricted staff access.
• You can request deletion of all your data at any time: find your client ID in the app's privacy section and email feedback@divvun.no.
• UiT – The Arctic University of Norway is the data controller and handles all data in line with applicable ethical and legal safeguards.
PARTNERS AND CAMPAIGN
• Built by Divvun (UiT – The Arctic University of Norway) with support from Nordic public broadcasters including Yle Sápmi and SVT.
• The "Tell a Future for the Language" campaign encourages Sámi speakers to contribute and raises visibility across Sweden, Norway and Finland.
GET INVOLVED — SMALL ACT, BIG IMPACT
Contributing takes only a few minutes but helps create better access to services in Sámi and strengthens language technology for future generations. Download Jietnašiella and donate your voice to a living resource for your community.
