The app I needed!
I’ve been looking at a bunch of stitch counting apps lately, and this is the ONLY one I’ve found that does what I was looking for. It’s a bit rough around the edges and there’s a few more features that’d be helpful to have (more on that later), but let me explain why this app is so helpful for me for Amigurumi.
Most other apps are very oriented on knitting and even those that have decent crochet support tend to be focused on clothing. Amigurumi has very different needs from clothing. There’s no charts, no changing the number of stitches based on a person’s size, and the number of rows tends to be a lot less. Because of that, many features in other apps aren’t needed. Even row counting itself is a bit superfluous when you can just count quickly up from the magic ring to find your place.
The issue is there’s a lot of complexity inside of each row, and almost every row is different from the last. It might be my ADHD, but unless I can have full concentration, it is very easy for me to lose my place within a row or mix up the current row with the last row. Even a simple ball might have a row like “2sc, dec, (4sc, dec) x 5, 2sc [30]”.
Instead of trying to mess with counters, it makes more sense to just be shown which stitch is next. And all that info is already there in the pattern. As a bonus, something interpreting the pattern can do some basic error checking to make sure the stitches add up to the stated total in the row, there isn’t a row missing, etc.
This does exactly that, showing you either stitch by stitch or a sub-group of stitches at a time (there’s a toggle). The voice control works pretty well too. I haven’t tried importing a ton of diff patterns yet, but a cropped pic of one did get read correctly, and can you can enter / edit manually as well.
For more features: First I’d rather this app concentrate on what it is doing vs trying to compete with YarnBuddy, etc. I don’t mind using one app for counting and one for more project-oriented management stuff (stash tracking, cost estimation, pattern markup, etc).
Some kind of general note/alert would be super helpful. Like if you add the text to a stitch (or a special stitch type), it just displays it when you get to it. There’s a few special stitches in the app like “marker” and “main color”, but that isn’t enough. I wouldn’t mind entering notes manually if it is too difficult to auto-read from a pic. Usually there aren’t tons of notes anyway.
There needs to be a few more stitch types. I’ve done patterns with a triple increase or decrease, which I don’t see in the list. It might be easier if someone can define their own stitch types (maybe even redefine existing ones like if someone preferred UK syntax) with in/out stitch counts (like triple increase goes from 1 to 3).
Being able to add a visual color to a stitch or group of stitches would be useful for color changes. Generic notes would be a good start, but visual colors would improve it. Instead of “finish this stitch with red” to prep for a color change, you could just see the next stitch is red and know to start switching in the current stitch.
A basic notes field on the project and/or parts could be helpful. While I’ll probably use two apps, for many people I’m sure it’d be nice to be able to just throw basic info like hook size, yarn used, etc into a text field.
Might be neat to have an optional alert to replace the stitch marker after finishing the first stitch of any round.
Thanks for making this app! It is really helpful so far and I wanted to review since I saw only one rating, which was low for some reason. I saw the last update was 6 months again, so I’m really hoping it isn’t abandoned. I’d pay real money for it! I can’t imagine I’m the only person that really needed this kind of app. It just needs a bit more exposure.
Having said that, I think if the feature of adding a popup notes in the pattern is added, and a few more stitch types, that’d be enough for me to be very productive with it, even if it wasn’t updated after that (besides for iOS compatibility upgrades).
