Almost perfect

I really like this app. I get to practice combinations, kanji writing, and have fun while doing so. I also love that it links to the Jisho website for additional information. Where this app could improve is how it helps with learning the Kun/On and vocabulary. The info there but barely reinforced. Some MIGHT appear during one of the quizzes — but not with enough frequency to get a firm grasp on their usage and application as you do the English definition. There is also no setting to adjust this. It’s great for getting started with Kanji but if you’re learning for reading/speaking, you eventually hit a wall with this. I hope they add this feature soon as this is still my favorite app to learn kanji.

The best kanji app!!

I’ve been studying Japanese for a few years, but I’ve never been able to get the hang of remembering kanji. Every other app I’ve tried has been largely ineffective or hit me with more work than I could handle. Kanji Book is fantastic! I can choose which kanji I want to focus on and practice them as much as I want until I feel comfortable. The compound and test features are effective at highlighting my trouble spots, and after only a few weeks of spending a few minutes a day practicing, I’m noticing huge improvements in reading comprehension and writing. No more feeling lost and overwhelmed! A huge thanks to the developer for making this available.

Finally a kanji app I’ll use

I’ve tried so many kanji apps and they’re never what I want. They’re either two hard to navigate or look terrible and uninviting and I’ve never used them for long. This is the first kanji app I think I’ll actually use.

It’s intuitive, easy to navigate, and I love the sound effects. I also love the different ways it just naturally tests you / mixes it up in the tests.

Fun but inflexible

This app is very helpful in learning kanji, but I wish that you can turn off certain modes like writing.

It’s good - just needs one more thing

I don’t mind that there is no audio. I have other resources for that. The layout is simple, attractive and fun to use. I enjoy drawing the kanji. I think the compound word scramble is REALLY cool and actually the main reason I do want to keep using it - except— I would like to see the compound once completed correctly written in Hiragana under the English word. It means little if I don’t know which On or Kun is being used based on that kanji combo. Perhaps this evolves in the app as I evolve in my learning. But combining kanji to form words but not see them in Hiragana but only in English is limiting. That said, what a cool free app it is.. It is a great way to start familiarizing with kanji.

Feature Request

I'm very glad that I found something without it charging for money. I have a mere complaint though. I wish that I could review and do tests for specific kanji characters instead of it being randomized for me. I have some trouble with memorizing readings for certain kanji.

Can you please add this feature

It is amazing but I think you should add the pronunciation of each kanji along with how to write it.

One of the best apps to learn kanji

It is amazing but I think you should add the pronunciation of each kanji along with how to write it.

Trash

Very unhelpful. Doesn’t provide name of the kanji. Also when your stuck with 29 kanji to try and figure out a compound pair, the hint is worse then useless. Try giving it to the person MAYBE? so they do t have to quit and retry it again and again

Feature request…

I love how straightforward this app is…but s couple more features would take it to another level:
1) Regarding the stroke hints, if a kanji has a radical that’s been previously taught, give that radical/kanji as a hint. Even native Japanese speakers learn kanji based on component radicals.
2) The ability to edit my list and add kanji learned outside the app. I’ve learned so many new kanji since starting to use this app and it’d be cool to see that reflected.

Thanks cfl789! Great feedback. I added the compound words as another activity so it wasn't all just flash cards, but you're right that it could be improved. Studying is tough! I use DuoLingo in addition to my app and a few others. Good luck on your journey!

Super efficient!

This has helped me so much and has given me a lot of motivation! I really recommend it if you want a fast and efficient way of learning kanji!

Great tool!

A great tool for beginners!!

Great, engaging, educational!

Super fun, clear, simple, and you can learn at your own pace. A few small things I don’t like: no choice between kun or on, no audio pronounciation, and no information on radicals. But very enjoyable.

Kanji made fun and cute!

I just started and already know about 300+ kanji going in. I love how it is self paced, no timers, you can revisit cards as often as you like (with cute incentives), and the program shows you the stroke order! My favorite little surprise was the compound words game where you can build your vocabulary and discover just how practical a pictographic text can be (no furigana given, but I have my jisho for that). I would have liked audio, but if you know your hiragana going into using this app, you are SET. Love this product! As a teacher of languages myself, I highly recommend it. Thank you for making and keeping it free!

Glad you like Kanji Book K 3 PO! Thanks for the kind review.

Best app for Kanji!! But I have a small request

I love this app, it is very good and provides stroke order, great simple tests, and has both on’yomi and kun’yomi written in hiragana(good practice)!! Nothing negative about this app.

My only suggestion is that for compounds, we can have a way to see how to pronounce them. Trying to figure out to use on’yomi or kun’yomi is difficult since there are many exceptions to the general rule.

Thank you for this great app, and for making it free! If there is anyway to donate and/or support it in anyway, let me know!

Thanks for the kind review. Great feedback about the difficulty of the compounds. I haven't updated Kanji Book in a while since it's totally free, but if I do, I'll try to make the compounds easier!

Almost there

Very good app for learning kanji. Self paced, graphics, learning tracking are all very good!!
Two areas could use some help tho

1. The name of each kanji should be provided
Even pressing more info, jisho, doesn’t provide the kanji names.

2. Kun and Om pronunciations are hard to read in the handwriting script a lot of times. Making it much plainer would be a significant help also.

Best app ever!

As far as I am concerned, this is the best 漢字 アプリ out there!
It has a lot of information on the kanji so you don’t miss anything, like on and kun, writing practice and the meaning.
I also love that they have a test so I can recape what I learned to see how much I really know. Also, I really like the compound words so that I don’t just learn the isolated 漢字.
五つ星!

Thanks for the nice review lalalalag! Good luck with your studies.

love design and UX

love the look of this app—it’s so different from all its competitors but it’s really not helpful that the app doesn’t teach pronunciation by way of audio or even just hiragana. so while it’s super useful for visual memorization it’s really not for speaking. and if it is that this options is available, then it wasn’t obvious to me and could then use some improvement!

Hi Hfsthnk. You can find the on and kun readings (hiragana) for each kanji by tapping on it. You are right that there is no audio. I'm a solo developer and this is a free passion project so I couldn't justify the cost.

Amazing

This app is so well made I love it so much!!! I can repeat as many times as I want and it makes learning kanji really simple!

This may be perfect!

Forgive me for the unprofessional review, but this may be the best kanji learning app(for me personally)! No ads, I can practice writing, teaches the Kun and On, the meaning of the kanji, and the cherry on top is I can test myself! Whoever helped develop this, thank you for making kanji easier to learn!
