Almost fully functional

So happy to see a proper macOS Karakeep client, with Safari extension! It’s *almost* there. When creating a bookmark from the Safari extension, if you want to add tags to the bookmark, it will successfully create the bookmark and create the tags, but it will not *assign* the tags to the bookmark. To assign tags, one must then open the app and manually do so on the new bookmark. This behavior persists on all platforms with the Safari extension - macOS, iOS, ipadOS.

Almost fully functional!

So happy to see someone made better macOS desktop client, with Safari extension!

Great extension!

Love it, but we need the ability to add to a list when saving a bookmark!

awesome

just what i needed to close the loop on migrating to self hosted karakeep, thanks

Response from developer

Great to hear! Thank you!

An excellent start, but needs better flow and refinement to be useful.

The developer has done an excellent job making this work well with self-hosted karakeep. It really does work and I appreciate that effort.

But right now this provides no functionality that you don’t get from the official karakeep app’s sharing extension. It also doesn’t make anything faster in terms of saving a link.

I have a few suggestions:
1. Clicking the Karakeeper button in the Safari toolbar should just instantly save the link with no further action required by the user. (For reference on how this should function, see the Instapaper browser extension.) Having to fill out a form is tedious. It’s actually faster for me to use the official app’s sharing extension, even though it then opens the Karakeep app. But at least it’s one action that doesn’t require any further input on my behalf.
2. If you really want to show options to tag and write a description — why I don’t know since Karakeep does these things automatically with AI — it should be through a popup overlay on the page that displays after the link has been saved to karakeep. (Again see how the Instapaper extension works…after it saves and confirms saving the link it shows some buttons in the upper right of the safari window with options to add tags, archive, etc..)
3. The icon in that displays in the toolbar needs work. It’s aesthetically unpleasing and distracting. Too big, lacks refinement, and it’s the thing leading me to disable this extension and just go with the official app’s share menu item most of all.

I hope the project continues and look forward to seeing it improve over time.

Doesn’t work

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work after adding my URL and API key the test connection fails

Response from developer

Self hosting is a bit of a tricky issue, visit pingie.com and shoot us a support note.

Good start

Glad to see some Safari love in the self hosting community! The app will work to send a link to Karakeep (previously: Hoarder), but it doesn’t do any interaction with tags. Won’t show AI tags, if they’re enabled, and manually entered tags don’t appear to be sent to your Karakeep instance.

Response from developer

Thank you for the feedback and we just updated KaraKeeper with a brand-new tagging system for new tags.
