a dating app that doesn’t commoditize people !
I’ve never been on dating apps before because I’ve always wanted a meet-cute, but also I hate the way they commoditize people. You can swipe through endlessly and never really see the human on the other end. I took a chance on Known and this app is great because you don’t swipe, you just get match suggestions with a long paragraph about a person and what you might like about each other, and ultimately the option to leap in and say you’ll give it a chance. So far great and stressless experience!

You’re kidding.
As a San Francisco native, this feels like the ultimate gentrified way to monetize dating. What really bothered me is that the requirement to pay in order to even go on a date was never clearly disclosed upfront. Then, after being matched, you’re asked to pay $15 just to secure the date. How was that amount even determined? It feels completely arbitrary and absurd.
I honestly don’t understand the value proposition of this app. The entire process is AI-driven. You tell an AI about yourself and what you’re looking for, and then an AI generates a match. There’s no real matchmaker, dating expert, or human involvement adding value to the experience.
The bigger issue is that after the match is made, you can’t message the person beforehand, ask questions, or get any sense of whether there’s actual compatibility or chemistry. Instead, you’re expected to trust an algorithm completely and then pay for the privilege of finding out whether the match was any good. Fifteen dollars. In this economy.
So let me get this straight: an AI decides who I should meet, I have no opportunity to communicate with that person beforehand, and then I have to pay money to show up to what is essentially a blind date? That’s a hard sell.
Most dating apps at least allow people to chat, learn about each other, and decide whether meeting in person makes sense. Here, the paywall comes before any meaningful interaction. Dating is already unpredictable enough without removing the ability to communicate and adding a fee on top of it.
The concept sounded interesting at first, but the execution feels more like a tech startup monetizing loneliness than a thoughtful dating experience. Between the lack of transparency, the inability to communicate with matches, and the unexpected fee, the whole experience comes across as misleading and overpriced. I simply can’t justify paying for every date with someone I’ve never interacted with based solely on an AI’s recommendation.

Great alternative for SF singles
Had my first date through Known this week and the whole experience went great! Love that I get to talk about myself and the app makes my profile for me. The matching is unique and love that they planned the venue and got reservations for us. No swiping, no stressing about small talk, just a real person and real date.
It may take a few days for the app to match you up, but I’d rather have fewer intentional matches over the dozens of shallow matches I get on standard apps.
This app is also new, and they’re slowly rolling out in SF. But that also means it is changing rapidly and getting updates. Excited to see what’s next!

My sophomore year of college I studied abroad in Prague. While there, I met the most wonderful woman at a random club. We had a great night until 7am but I never got her contact and had to fly home a week later.
