About

Kökçe tells you where Turkish words come from. One word is chosen each day. Its origin, the languages it passed through, its first written attestation and its meaning today all sit on one screen. JOURNEY Follow a word step by step: where it was born and which languages carried it into Turkish. Each step shows the form and meaning in that language. Reconstructed forms are marked with an asterisk. CROSSING PATHS Words that look nothing alike may have passed through the same link along the way. Kökçe finds those crossings and connects the words: fikir, tefekkür and mefkûre meet in the same Arabic form, and so do rahat and rayiha. Browse them from a word's entry or from a list of their own. DICTIONARY Over 800 words. Filter by origin language, keep your favourites. Search follows Turkish rules, so "sarki" still finds "şarkı". SOURCES Every entry names the source it rests on: Nişanyan Sözlük, the Turkish Language Association's Güncel Türkçe Sözlük, Kubbealtı Lugatı, Tietze. Unknown fields are left empty rather than invented. Where an origin is disputed, the competing view is given too. HOME AND LOCK SCREEN See the word of the day in a widget. Small, medium and large sizes sit alongside Lock Screen widgets, and you choose which pool each widget draws from. SIRI AND SPOTLIGHT Ask "what's the word of the day in Kökçe" and Siri answers without opening the app. Every word is indexed in Spotlight, so it surfaces as you search. DAILY REMINDER The word of the day arrives at the time you choose, in your device's local time. WORD POOL Draw the daily word from the mixed, everyday or lesser-known pool. Open the lesser-known pool to stretch your vocabulary. FOR EVERYONE VoiceOver and Dynamic Type are supported throughout. The app works offline, and dictionary updates arrive in the background as the catalogue grows. FREE AND OPEN SOURCE No ads, no subscription, no account. The app collects nothing and sends nothing to a server. The code is MIT and the content is CC BY-SA 4.0; both are public on GitHub.
