Perfect hiking companion app
Pretty great find for a free app with push alerts. I spent a few weeks traveling around the Japanese countryside (Nagano, Tohoku, parts of Hokkaido) and a friend warned me that bear encounters are a real thing there. Found KumaMihari and it quickly became something I checked every morning before heading out.
It pulls together bear sighting reports from all over Japan into a single map, which is huge because otherwise you'd be trying to piece together scattered local news articles in Japanese. Being able to see recent activity near wherever I was staying gave me way more confidence planning day hikes and trail runs.
A couple of times it actually made me rethink a route, which I'm glad about in hindsight. Even if you're not a hardcore outdoors person, if your trip takes you anywhere rural — onsens in the mountains, temple walks, cycling routes, it's worth having on your phone just for the peace of mind. Nothing else like it that I could find.
