About
Will the clouds clear? Watch them move across the map.
KumoScope is a weather app that lets you view cloud and rain-cloud information from weather satellites overlaid on a map.
In addition to showing the current cloud coverage, KumoScope lets you see how the clouds have moved over time and where rain clouds are expected to move next—all on a single timeline.
Key Features
• Display Himawari weather satellite imagery on a map (available in Japan)
• Overlay rain-cloud information on the cloud imagery
• Play back cloud and rain-cloud movement from approximately the past three hours through the present
• Display rain-cloud forecasts up to approximately 15 hours ahead
• View weather forecasts up to 14 hours ahead for a specific point on the map (tap your current location or place a pin anywhere)
• Move the time dial with your finger to jump to the time you want to see
• Switch between Satellite Image, Digital Cloud, and Weather views
• Adjust cloud opacity from 0% to 100%
• Turn rain-cloud display on or off
• View estimated sky conditions around your current location
• Switch between North Up and Heading Up
• Customize the display of city names, place names, and prefectural borders
• Automatically switch satellite imagery based on day and night
Rather than focusing only on cloud height or technical classifications, KumoScope is designed to make it easy to see at a glance whether a location is cloudy and whether rain clouds are approaching.
The timeline also indicates when cloud and rain-cloud data exists, along with the data retrieval status. This helps you determine whether an image is missing because the data has not yet been retrieved or because no data was provided for that time.
Data and Important Notes
This app uses weather satellite imagery, rain-cloud information, precipitation forecasts, weather distribution information, and other data provided on the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) website.
Weather data updates may be delayed. Depending on network conditions and the status of the data provider, some images may not be available.
KumoScope is not an official app of the Japan Meteorological Agency. When preparing for disasters or making decisions involving life or property, please also check the latest disaster-prevention information issued by the JMA, local governments, and other public agencies.
