Kind of Silly

Jazz musician here. I saw a little square piece of paper pinned to a board that suggested you get this app because “the house band is missing their lead soloist so you grab your phone and save the day!” I paraphrase of course, but after seeing that, my first thought was “there’s no such thing as a lead soloist,” and my second thought was “who in their right mind thinks an app is a suitable substitute for a lead soloist?” but I decided to give the app a chance. I download it and open it and it gives you a display of 6 different settings/styles. Only one is available in the free version “smoky jazz” so I try that one. When you select a style, you can tap on the blank screen to play a G minor blues scale with a vibraphone sound. There is a play button at the bottom which when pressed will play a backing track. A simple minor blues, nothing wrong with that. You can then play along with the backing track and sound like a reasonably okay high school vibraphone player. However, it gets old quickly. This is an app for anyone younger than 10 and doesn’t play a real instrument. The suggestion that anyone musician would unironically bring their phone to a jam session and tap their screen to a minor blues scale is absurd. However, I’m sure I’ll have a lot of fun bringing it to my next jam session and having a good laugh with it when we call Miles Davis’ All Blues.

Response from developer

Thank you for trying this app. So glad you shared your experience especially from the perspective of a jazz musician. Perhaps the first part of the description: "Easy jamming for the rest of us" was not clear enough to indicate it was not targeted to seasoned professionals like yourself. For the next update, I will do some rewording to make this clearer. Thank you for your candid feedback.
