Very limited free tier

Absolutely disappointed with how limited is the free tier. When all of this info is freely available on the web, and there are free tools to learn the same stuff Mimo, freecodecamp, theodinproject. You should’ve let the people get the learning part for free but challenges and other stuff that’s more for polishing and has to be unique paid. But your app teaches the strings but then a beginner is locked behind a paywall to learn arrays in your app. This is very low. I would’ve supported the app monetarily if it was free just like I support other projects. But you’re converting 5 slides with 10 paragraphs of text that’s available on MDN and JavaScript.info into money and you won’t even let the beginner learn the whole thing. 👎

Less suitable for beginners in programming

This app might not be the best fit for everyone who wants to learn programming, especially if they're struggling with the basics. The lessons could benefit from better structure and clarity—perhaps they don't fully equip learners with the tools needed to tackle more complex challenges.

Wish I had this app in college

Im reviewing my Python skills while Im applying for jobs and this is such a great tool. While most of the beginning courses act as a refresher for me it’s still a great tool for experienced developers. If only this existed when I was in school. Its so easy going through a lesson during down time. Plus the Questions section is a great way to practice your skills on the go. Amazing app

Awesome!! Very cool

I really like this app. It’s very underrated for what it is.

Some suggestions:
Change the icon to sometime dark theme that would appeal to more coders. And I’ve you do that I’m sure you’ll get lots more downloads. You have a lot of potential to be a very popular app and I love all of the effort you put into this. 👍

Has potential

I just tried to write a review but my damn iPhone decided to delete it once I was almost finished. Second try.
Firstly, I'll will say I find it suspicious that there's only one review, without a comment. I do like the privacy policy though, I like privacy.

This app is different than what I first thought it was for. It's not meant for learning syntax and concepts like variables and functions, but instead it's meant as practice for what you've already learned and to (maybe) challenge you to think. I'll still use it to learn Go.
With that in mind, I find the first few questions a bit weird, as someone just learning how to code might not know about return values or functions, yet the first question seemed to assume you knew what they were. It'd probably be better practicing writing a variable.

The GUI reminds me of Duolingo somewhat, its questions were similar, same with the leaderboard and streak features and a few other things. Albeit these are general gamification features, and I still don't like slow chest opening animations. I dislike the entire gamification concept actually, but that's just my opinion. I've seen how effective it can be, especially on social medias.
The GUI is a bit slow, buttons take like 4-5 seconds to do anything. The GUI can be slightly confusing, I was on a question clicking submit and ended up in some spot I wasn't familiar with. It also took me a few seconds to find the code tab.
And I do not like that you need to use an external service (e.g., iPhone account, Gmail, etc) to use the app.

Now, it does ask you to use its premium feature every so often which isn't awful. It's capitalism. What does annoy me is how it pesters you to enable notifications (if not enabled).

Sadly, I haven't used it for long so I can't attest to the quality of the questions.

Overall, it's not meant to teach you new things but instead to challenge you as you learn elsewhere. I've not tested how well it suceeds at that though. The GUI is nice but a bit slow, and takes advantage of gamification. And there is a bit to be desired.

Response from developer

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review! You're correct that CodenQuest is designed to reinforce and challenge your existing programming knowledge rather than teach foundational syntax and concepts. I’ll try your suggestion to incorporate simpler exercises for new programmers. For the app slowness, the last update should have improved the GUI response. Regarding the requirement to use an external service to sign up, I am exploring ways to simplify the login process. I also recognize that not everyone appreciates frequent notifications or prompts for premium features, and I am committed to finding a better balance. Thank you again for your insights. I am continually working on improvements, and your feedback helps a lot. Please feel free to reach out with any more suggestions or questions as you continue using the app. Best regards, Cyril, Founder of CodenQuest

Great app!

ui is great, autocomplete is great
one complaint is the tab button doesnt work as intended and i always get indentation errors

Response from developer

Thank you very much for your comment! I’m really glad you like the UI and the autocomplete. Regarding the tab button with indentation errors, I appreciate you pointing out this issue. I am going to check more and try to have a fix ready soon. Wish you a happy day! Cyril, Founder of CodenQuest

Disappointed

I paid 49.99 for a yearly subscription. I cancelled the subscription and should have premium access until next year. The app now asks me to upgrade to premium. I never got notification of trial period ending either. Is it possible to request refund? Contact founder button never worked for me.

Response from developer

Hi there, I’m Cyril, the founder of CodenQuest. Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention, and I'm truly sorry for the inconvenience you've experienced. It sounds like there has been a misunderstanding with your subscription, and I want to help resolve it as quickly as possible. To address your concerns: 1. Subscription Access: You should indeed have premium access until the end of your subscription period despite canceling. This seems to be a technical glitch, and we're committed to fixing it immediately. 2. Notification of Trial Period: I'm sorry you didn't receive any notification. We'll review our notification system to ensure this doesn’t happen again. 3. Refund Request: Yes, it is possible to request a refund. Please contact our support team directly at contact@codenquest.com I’m also disappointed to hear that the 'Contact Founder' button didn’t work for you. We’ll investigate and resolve this issue as well. Your experience matters greatly to us, and we’re here to ensure you get the service you deserve. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Warmest regards, Cyril

Fun

I just did the first level and it is fun..I guess…

Worst coding app ever

The way they teach syntax is way too confusing. You never type out your code and everything is in the form of a function. Much better apps are out there to learn to code

Response from developer

Hi there, I’m Cyril, the founder of CodenQuest. I wanted to personally reach out and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I truly appreciate your honesty and can see how our app might have missed the mark for you. It seems we could have done a better job of communicating that our app is more about practicing coding than learning it from scratch. For beginners eager to learn the basics, including syntax, a section recommending resources tailored to newcomers is in progress. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us, and it plays a crucial role in how we evolve. If you have any suggestions, or if there’s anything specific you’d like to see improved, I’m all ears. Your input is not only heard but acted upon. Thanks once again for your review. Warmest regards, Cyril.

Great app

It’s like Duolingo for coding, perfect

This app is fantastic!

Turns out, gamification is a great motivator for me. I’m SO excited that I’ve found this app. I’ve wanted to take on programming but just don’t make the time. Now I’ll have that extra little push to do at least a few minutes each day. I think that’s the key. The app is intuitive and great to look at too!

Really enjoyable app to learn coding

I have been genuinely looking for an easy to use and learn app that I can engage with on my commute or when I have windows or time that will help reinforce my learning and this is definitely it. Great job codenquest team!

Nice app!

As someone who knows nothing about code, this has been a fun entry level challenge!

Great way to learn to code

Whether you want to learn to code your first language or practice your skills or learn something new this app is brilliant.

Great app!

Seems like great app! I appreciate it supports various languages. I hope it continues to improve. It feels a bit slow.. but i’m looking forward to future improvements :)

Response from developer

Hi, Thank you, I really appreciate your feedback! I’m going to work on improving the execution time especially for compiled language for sure. Lots of improvements and exciting features are being worked on right now, hope you will like it! Kind regards, Cyril, Founder of CodenQuest

cannot delete account; buggy solutions in code snippets.

title says it all.

Response from developer

Hi, I wanted to personally thank you for your feedback, which I've taken very seriously. Upon reviewing your comment, I discovered a bug that prevented account deletion. Furthermore, I identified another issue within the Rust solution for the Reverse Array exercise. An edge case was overlooked, and for this oversight, I sincerely apologize. In response to your valuable feedback, I've implemented a feature that allows users to easily report bugs within any question. Both identified issues have now been resolved. Your feedback has been instrumental in improving the app's quality and user experience. As a solo developer, my goal is to provide an enjoyable and stable app experience, and your input has significantly contributed to this effort. If you're satisfied with the updates and improvements, I would be grateful if you could consider updating your rating. Your support means a lot to me. Kind regards, Cyril, Founder of CodenQuest

Amazing App

I learned so much from this app. Very user friendly for beginners like me.

Fun and Educational!

I’ve been wanting to learn to code, and this game is a great way to learn while making it fun!

A fun way to practice coding

I’m just a beginner and I was looking for an app to do real coding exercises (and not just quizzes or pieces of code) and this is totally what I was looking for. If you want to practice coding on a daily basis with little exercises, go for it! The app seems new so I’m glad to be able to help. Feels like I found a hidden gem!

Start coding on your phone

Just dove into CodenQuest, and wow - the fluidity of the coding editor blew me away! The autocomplete with the space bar and the jumping with the tab button are really a great idea. It feels like writing a message to a friend. The gamification on top of it is a nice touch too! 10/10 recommended 👌
