I have never written an app review in my life. Sir Duckworth made me do it.
Seriously, I have never before written an App Store review, but Let’s Duck has delighted me so continuously that I feel I have no choice.
I downloaded it thinking a little pixel duck on my Apple Watch might make workouts more fun. Instead, Sir Duckworth—my blue duck—has acquired a name, a top hat, a leaf, a pebble, a full jar of cookies, and a human who is now genuinely interested in what he might do next.
The details are what make this app extraordinary. My duck wears a visor when we go running. If I tap him during a workout, he jumps. He lets me tickle him. He reacts differently to different workouts; this morning, after a core workout, he informed me: “long spine. core lit.” He finds tiny treasures that are dated and kept on his shelf. He’s glowy when he’s happy. There are rest days where the duck rests too. None of this is necessary, but all of it is wonderful.
Underneath all the silliness is also one of the gentlest approaches to fitness motivation I’ve encountered, and I’ve used a lot of different apps. It rewards movement without making exercise feel punitive, and it treats rest as part of the experience rather than failure. I genuinely look forward to my workout (or not working out) with Sir D.
I paid 99 cents for Unlimited. Had I known what I was getting, I would have paid more—at this point I feel like I owe the developer money. 😂
If you enjoy tiny details, ridiculous amounts of charm, and being disproportionately pleased because a pixel duck found a leaf, get this app.
