AWESOME idea, some issues
1. The app creates a bubbly pop sound when the control buttons are touched, I.e. when moving in between the levels, selecting items for your shopping list, and when a grocery item is picked up. This bubbly sound does not produce any authentic real life sound of picking up items in a store and some kids don’t like that sound and don’t need to hear it to learn about shopping sounds… There is an “effects” toggle, but inexplicably this sound isn’t considered an effect and even if it were, ALL effects would be shut off, when really there should be an independent button for “button effects” so those can be controlled separately.
2. There is also a loud magical chime sound before starting the game that also serves no purpose for learning about shopping sounds, and there should be a button to turn this on or off separately.
3. Occasional glitches when putting items on to your shopping list exist, and when this happens it prevents the player from proceeding and the only way to get out is to swipe out of the app and restart it. Occasionally when trying to add an item to the shopping list it SKIPS a spot, leaving it blank with no shopping item- but when you go to play an item from your shopping cart is duplicated- now you have two mangoes on your list but the application only lets you put one of the mangoes in your cart and you can’t finish shopping because the second mango on your list doesn’t have a check mark. When you proceed to the check out nothing happens.
4. The donuts. When you put a donut on your list, it allows you to grab the donut without first grabbing the piece of paper or bag shown. In fact it will NOT allow the player to grab a piece of paper first to touch the donut with. This teaches kids to grab donuts directly from the trays, and not use the paper provided, or tongs, or anything that would keep those trays clean for all customers. Missed opportunity to teach how to pick up foods like this properly. Many kids on the spectrum are very visual and routine based, and you are teaching bad cleanliness habits. Yuck!
5. The checkout experience:
The checkout lady says nothing. You can hear the beep beep beep of items scanned, but there is no “hello”, there is no “your total is…” there is no “have a good day” or anything you might hear in an actual store upon checking out. So boo on that.
Such a great idea and I do hope these thoughts inspire some changes to make this an AWESOME learning app.
Response from developer
Thank you so much for your review. We are in the process of trying to find an investor to fund our app so we can make changes to make the app more realistic & reflect a real supermarket environment. The long term goal is to develop apps to support children at the dentist, doctor, school, airport etc. if you have any ideas with regard to funding would love to hear them. I will keep you posted as to our journey Thankyou once again for your feedback 😊
