About

Lugát is an offline Kashmiri dictionary for iPhone and iPad, built by the Yimberzol Foundation to make the Kashmiri lexicon easy to search on a phone. TWO DICTIONARIES, KEPT SEPARATE Lugát bundles two different works and lets you choose between them with a tab on the Search screen. They are not merged, because they disagree on spelling, coverage and era. GRIERSON, 1932 — around 21,000 entries George A. Grierson's A Dictionary of the Kashmiri Language (1916-1932), one of the most thorough records of the language ever compiled. Headwords are romanised in Koashur Khat, with Grierson's own spelling shown alongside. HASSAN, 2010 — around 6,000 words, every one with audio A Pronouncing Dictionary of Kashmiri by Shafi Shauq and Omkar N. Koul. Every entry has a recorded pronunciation you can play with one tap. All 6,000 recordings are bundled in the app, so they work with no connection. SEARCH THAT UNDERSTANDS DICTIONARIES Type a Kashmiri word or an English meaning. Exact headword matches rank first, partial matches next, and definition mentions last, so the word you meant is at the top rather than buried. BROWSE BY PART OF SPEECH Nouns, adjectives, adverbs and everything else, each with its own list, in whichever dictionary you have selected. FLASHCARDS Build a deck from any part of either lexicon and work through it. Swipe or tap to mark what you know and what needs another look. WORD OF THE DAY A new word each morning, drawn from the Hassan dictionary so it always comes with a recording. COMPLETELY OFFLINE Both dictionaries, all 6,000 recordings and both typefaces are inside the app. No network connection is used at any point: no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking. Lugát works on a plane, on a train through the valley, or with the SIM out. A NOTE ON THE SOURCES Grierson's dictionary is a century old. It records early-twentieth-century Kashmiri, so some entries are archaic, and it was written inside the colonial ethnographic tradition - a small number of entries contain language that is offensive by today's standards. We present the text unaltered, because editing a historical lexicon would misrepresent it. Word of the Day, the only content shown without searching, is drawn from a filtered subset. Lugát is free, with no in-app purchases. Developed by the Yimberzol Foundation info@yimberzol.org
