Cannot open the app, it gets stuck on a grey page and does not move.
Fun toy Terrible App
2.4 Ghz needed. Couldn’t figure out how to separate 5G from 2.4. Our friend told us to move far from the signal and we were finally able to connect. We contacted US Tech Support by e-mail. If Luka is a gift you’ll struggle to get their help. They need the order number before they assist, fortunately we had it, and didn’t need their help in the end.

WiFi connection
Could not connect to WiFi. But I had to provide my phone number to start the process. Now they have my phone number and I still can’t get the thing connected to the Internet. Seems like it’s pretty limited in functionality without that crucial step. Waste of time and money!

Cannot upload book
Tried numerous times to upload book. Finally uploaded then recorded. Then deleted my recording. Book not uploaded anymore. This app needs help.
Where is the app settings
I want to change the app language but cannot find the app settings
Doesn’t connect
Nothing I do can connect the little robot to the WiFi. The troubleshooting menu you get as a result of not being able to connect is not helpful. Either the robot is broken or the app is broken, I don’t know which. But my experience with Luka has been very frustrating. He can read books that he already has stored in his memory, but there is no way to update him or get him to speak a language other than Spanish without connecting. Interesting idea, poor execution.

Super Slow and Self Recording Does Not Work
Like many other reviewers, the biggest issue is that the self recording feature does not work, it keeps getting stuck at 3/4%. We have a lot of books not in the database that we wanted to self-record. But with this feature not working, the $200+ Luka device is starting to not worth its value. Additionally, everything is slow, from switching between audio versions and finding books.

Need to be able to select language
The English version is not user-friendly. You have to switch the ios system to Chinese in order to use the Chinese version. It is quite troublesome.
I had issues but overall it was great
I encountered the same issue with another reviewer that my Luka couldn’t upload for one book. I tried different wifi, switch to cellular, leave the upload window for quite a long time. I searched online too but couldn’t find anything related to the trouble shooting. Eventually I decided to re-uninstall the app. After that, I’m finally able to upload the pictures. I recall when the issue happened, I just switched cellular to wifi in the middle of the uploading process. Maybe that was the cause.

App Language
The app looks like it could be really useful. Unfortunately it’s difficult to figure out if there is an option to switch the language for the actual app to English, Korean, or Spanish. Given that Luka can translate books into those different languages, the app should be in those languages too, otherwise only those who can read Chinese can use it.

Cannot upload self-recording
I can’t upload the self-recording books. The upload speed is extremely slow and the upload progress always stays at 4%.
Unable to upload
There was one book my kids like most and Luka can’t read yet, so I tried to upload it myself! The uploading didn’t work at all. It stucked at 3% or 4% and it didn’t make any progress even I left it overnight. Can’t comment on the recording part as it would be the step after uploading the pics. Tried to contact the WeChat help. 0 response! Very upset.

Great for American Kids Learning Chinese
As a mom raising kids studying Chinese, I have downloaded several Chinese educational apps and bought and borrowed several Chinese educational toys. Luka has been the most valuable of these resources by far, and, though the app is not completely in English, the developers have at least put the headings and key sections in English, so, I can navigate it as a non-native Chinese speaker.
I love that I can see how many books my kids have read each day and that we can even use Luka away from home with books we have in our “owned book list”. I also love that I can use Luka to say messages in Chinese for me without worrying that I am messing up my kids’ pronunciation.
I would love to see more Chinese educational products be as user friendly for non-native parents as this app and the Luka device are.

My kids use it everyday.
We have a sizable simplified Chinese book collection at home. My kids are getting much more reading time now that we have Luka! Most of the time, it recognizes books and reads them very well. Great experience.
